Hughton back in charge

MIKE ASHLEY is hopeful of positive developments in his attempts to sell Newcastle United by the end of the week, but he has been forced to confirm the temporary managerial appointment of Chris Hughton.

The squad are back for preseason training tomorrow but any hopes among the supporters of seeing Alan Shearer take the first session of the summer disappeared yesterday.

With four consortia undergoing a process of due diligence, Keith Harris, the investment broker seeking a buyer, is satisfied that progress is being made and that Ashley will sell sooner rather than later.

But with the situation far from clear, Shearer’s installation as the club’s permanent manager cannot be confirmed, paving the way for Hughton to step in – again.

Hughton will resume caretaker control, having been asked to take on such a role on two separate occasions last season, and he will be assisted by Colin Calderwood while Ashley continues to press ahead with his attempts to sell.

“Everything will be done properly with the group of players that is there and everything going on outside of that has to stay outside of that,’’ said Hughton. “Whatever the situation will be, when it comes to the first day of pre-season training, the players will go through a good correct programme for however long it is until someone takes over.”

When Hughton does meet up with the squad much will feel the same, although along with the absence of Shearer the dressing room will be lacking the players out of contract.

Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Peter Lovenkrands, Cacapa and David Edgar are all searching for new clubs with their contracts due to expire at midnight tonight.

Edgar should complete a quick move back to the Premier League with Burnley by the end of the week.

The 22-year-old has been in discussion with Birmingham after becoming unhappy with the terms offered to him at St James’ Park but Burnley boss Owen Coyle has stepped in.

Now the defender, raised in Canada, is expected to finalising a switch to Turf Moor and Newcastle will be due a minimal fee as he is under 24.

“I don’t know how long I will be in charge for. It could be three days, a week, two weeks, three weeks... I’m not sure,” he admitted. “My job will be to make sure that the squad is properly prepared, to begin work on pre-season and begin a good programme that gives us a chance of doing what we want to do – getting back into the Premier League.

“As regards anything else like bringing in players, that is not my responsibility at the moment. At some stage someone will come in and take over from me.

“Everyone is aware that there is interest in taking over the club and something could happen soon.

“But I’m not sure when that will be – I don’t know anymore than anyone at the moment. For all our sakes we hope it is sooner rather than later. Whether it is Alan Shearer or not, whoever comes in needs as much time as possible. It is definitely a case of the sooner, the better – because there is work to be done.”

Hughton doesn’t feel that the lack of a manager will cause too much damage at

this stage, however. The club’s internationals have been given an extra week to recover, so he will be overseeing a threadbare squad for the first few days.

“It won’t harm things too much,” he said. “Certainly in the past during pre-seasons you don’t see too much of the manager during those first few days. He will generally let the coaches take care of things, so in that respect things aren’t too different.

“We will work hard over the rest of the week, put the grounding in there and try to push on towards those first games now.”

“I really enjoyed working with Alan,” he revealed. “Both him and Iain are very professional people and Alan certainly has an aura about him.”

Hughton is worse than Kinnear imo.

He undoubtedly did worse statistically. Seemed to command even less respect as well ;):o

He's probably an decent coach, but clearly he's not a manager.

What truly amazes me with Assley is the way he keeps making the same mistakes again and again.

He's the only coach left pulling a wage. Everyone else has pissed off.

What's scary is if the sale doesn't go through, how many players do you need to officially be able to field a team in the Championship?

I'm considering putting a tenner on Butt as player/manager. Then he can sack Hughton and Calderwood and save a bit more money.

hughton was a good coach but never a manager... (he helped spurs to 2 5th placed finishes in the prem league....)

I've got no doubt he's a canny coach. Even if he had the potential to be a decent manager the complete lack of authority he has due to the circumstances etc. negates that anyway.

Can't see this as anything more than an effort to get some training done while the madness sorts itself out.

It's not like he'll be installed as manager under Shepherd.... will he? :o

Kinnear wants to be Toon boss again

JOE Kinnear has revealed he wants to return to Newcastle United as manager.

And the former Magpies boss believes he could have kept the club in the Premier League had he not been forced to step down after heart surgery.

Kinnear is now recuperating after a triple bypass, and would love the chance to lead Newcastle back into the top flight if Mike Ashley's proposed sale of the club falls through.

He said: "I have gone from being bad to being much better than I was. I feel as fit as a fiddle.

"I love the game and am desperate to get back into it sooner rather than later.

"Mike knows I'm still available. I'm not sure how far down the road they are to selling it.

"If they don't, and haven't got anyone else, then I'd love to return. My opportunity would be to support Mike and Derek (Llambias)."

Newcastle won just four games under Kinnear before he took ill on the morning of the West Brom game in February, but he said: "I enjoyed my time up there and enjoyed the people.

"The run and the results I had were good."
