Blu Ray Player <£70

Is it actually worth getting a Blu Ray player, given that it looks like hard copy's of films/music are fast becoming obsolete?

You can legally download high definition films and stream them to your tv with little hassle these days, so why buy another bit of kit?

p.s. this isn't having a go at the deal, which looks good, just bored and wondering.

Stupid question, but do Bluray players play DVDs? Are there any that can record DVDs as well?

I'm thinking of getting a new fuck of HD TV soon, might just get a PS3 to go with it though. Are these reasonable Bluray players?

Not to mention that there's an even higher definition format and "3D" waiting in the wings (and that blu-ray discs are very expensive even for old films).

Blu-ray could be the Vista of visual formats.

PS3 is an entry level Blu Ray player. Same as using your PS2 to watch DVDs. Good now but you will probably want a proper Blu Ray player in a few years, if its not obsolete by then that is

The beauty of with a PS3 is that the firmware can be updated via the built in wifi, a standalone Blu-Ray player cannot do this.

Another stupid question but can you get an infrared controller for the PS3? I.e. is it as easy to use as a standard player? Oh, and does it support 5.1 sound?

Games and Blu-Ray aside it's a great media player, awesome for playing digital content with it being DIVX compatible.

Fully willing to accept that it is only me, but has anyone else found a lot of Sony Playstation owners to be almost militant in their praise for/defense of, their chosen Console. When I say I've got a 360, they tingle with anger, telling me I've wasted my money and there console is a Blu-ray player etc. etc. etc.

A trait I've not seen from Wii or 360 owners...

From what my geeky companions over at the arcade forums tell me, PS3 is just a fancy media centre and not all that freat for playing games and shit online

If you are after a stand alone games console then its 360 everytime

Been happening since the Spectrum/C64 days and probably before. Wii users are a different demographic mind, dunno about Xbox, maybe if you had a PS3 your Xbox mates would tingle with anger. School yard stuff. Having said that , Mac Owners are tossers.

Oh aye, there's always been rivallry, especially Sega/Nintendo. But the Playstation fellas just seem a little more, I dunno... fervent. Just like Mac users in fact.

Like I said, it could just be the lads I know.

I take your point about the Wii, given that it's mainly used for party games or by girls.
