Americans favourite to take over Newcastle

There appears to be some confidence in the City of London that the proposed sale of Newcastle United has entered a new phase and that an as yet undisclosed American consortium is favourite to buy the Championship club from owner Mike Ashley. Whether Ashley gets the £100m asking price remains to be seen but there are suggestions a preliminary agreement could even be announced this week.

Ashley only formally put the club back on the market a week ago, but it is likely that he decided to sell as soon as relegation from the Premier League was confirmed at the end of May and broker Keith Harris of Seymour Pierce was reportedly commissioned to find a buyer soon after.

There have been several parties linked with a bid and an American interest has been mentioned from the beginning. It is said that Newcastle have prepared their accounts for due diligence and that the process could be quicker than usual.

There is a feeling of the last days of the Ashley regime at St James', from where the managing director, Derek Llambias, was allegedly absent for the bulk of last week. Llambias had suffered the embarrassment of having his company BMW repossessed by a local hire firm.

The possible proximity of a sale of the club has also meant that player sales have been placed on hold. But Michael Owen, a free agent, has had a personal brochure produced to advertise his talents, playing and commercial, by his representatives.

Oh really? It already seems to have been taking some time? I think this is more bullshit to keep journalists in a job.

This I gotta see B)

quick pan to slow-mo, 24-style screen wipes of a man sitting in a suit in the stands, feigning empathy for his colleagues on the field?

rivetting viewing I'm sure... As long as it's better than his helicopter video.

Ronald McDonald would be a quantum leap of an improvement over Ashley.

The story seems so vague, it's hard to get excited about it. Maybe someone at the club is just putting one of these stories out each week to build interest in the club sale. From the last list of possible buyers only FS looked serious to me and although he and his backers might be just about able to buy the club, I don't get the feeling they are rolling in it. It strikes me that a serious buyer would wrap up a deal pronto with the approaching prep for the new season, every week that goes by I get the feeling there are no serious buyers. Hope I'm wrong cause the longer this drags on, the longer we stay in the CCC.

Was it not AEG and Anschutz who were interested last year?

No, it wasn't AEG.

Only reason I remember that was I was completely convinced it was them being mentioned as the anonymous American consortium, but folks on here directed me to a news article in which Uncle Phil categorically denied any interest.

Now, that was then... could be a different story now.

As bad as Ashley has been, dunno if AEG would be any better. I'm a L.A. Kings fan- AEG has owned us for 10 years now and we've made the playoffs three our four times in that stretch- once we got out of the first round.

Who knows though- they signed Becks for the Galaxy... maybe they just don't like their hockey team.

Bah, I come back from my honeymoon and still there's nothing happening... if anything things seem to be going in reverse (if that's even possible!). And what's this about Houghton being made manager? Ashely really is a fat c*nt isn't he? At least I've got all the wedding presents to go through yet, it should give me a distraction for a bit longer.

On a side note, I was stood next to Ant McPartlin and his missus in the Airport in Majorca yesterday, poor bloke looked proper rough... I think it's even getting to him and his ever-present Saturday night cheerfulness <_<
