Four in frame to take over Newcastle United

FOUR potential buyers are in the frame to take over Newcastle United.

 

A consortium represented by former chairman Freddy Shepherd is believed to have staged meetings with investment bankers Seymour Pierce yesterday.

 

The group headed by the former United chairman are currently combing the club’s finances, in a period known as ‘due diligence’.

 

But it is believed they will face hefty competition from an as yet unknown wealthy South African businessman.

 

The Chronicle understands he lodged a serious bid yesterday afternoon and could be set toenter a period of due diligence today as he checks Newcastle United’s financial footings.

 

Those two bids are at an advanced stage but the Singapore-based Profitable Group fronted by former Liverpool Player Steve McMahon remain serious contenders.

 

The group, whose interest was revealed by the Chronicle on Tuesday, issued a statement via their own website confirming their efforts to buy the Tyneside club.

 

It read: “The Profitable Group can confirm that it has expressed an initial interest in acquiring Newcastle United.

 

“A preliminary discussion with the representatives appointed to handle the sale of the club has been held, but contrary to some reports no direct talks have been held with either the wwner, Mike Ashley, or the chairman, Derek Llambias.

 

“The Group consider the leaking of The Group’s interest in this matter unfortunate, and as supporters of Newcastle United seek only to serve in the best interests of the club, the fans and the local community. The Group will not be making any further comment at the present time.”

 

Also still in the running but yet to make a firm bid is an Omani consortium, Sultan Oabood bin Said who is reported to be worth around £1.1bn is said to be involved in the potential offer.

 

The 68-year-old’s family control the Gulf state and it is understood he could provide any future United manager with a significant transfer war chest.

 

A source close to negotiations said: “The Freddy Shepherd consortium and a South African businessman appear to be most advanced but others remain serious contenders. The Shepherd consortium are going through the books.”

 

Commentators in South Africa believe any move by an entrepreneur from that country could be stalled by Newcastle’s £100m price tag.

 

Kgomotso Mokoena, a sports reporter with Johannesburg-based newspaper the Sunday Times, said: “Everybody here considers a move out of reach for many South African businessmen. The club would not come cheap and it might be a long shot for anyone here. There was speculation around six months ago of a South African buyout but that disappeared.”

CHRIS HUGHTON is waiting in the wings to come in as Newcastle United caretaker boss for a third stint should Alan Shearer not get the green light from Mike Ashley to take charge.

 

This would most likely go down like a lead balloon on Tyneside, with fans being asked to part with their season ticket cash from today – 40 years to the day since United won the Fairs Cup.

 

Former Tottenham player Hughton took charge of United in the aftermath of Keegan-gate last September and again took the reins after Joe Kinnear when he suffered heart problems.

 

Hughton’s record in charge during the first stint was played four, lost four during what many Toon fans call Black September.

 

And when Kinnear was admitted to hospital just hours before the West Brom game in February, the win at the Hawthorns was as good as it got for the ex-White Hart Lane favourite.

 

Hughton then won just one game in six matches, meaning a tally of one victory in 10 games compared to Alan Shearer’s run of one win, two draws and five defeats when he came in to lift a demoralised and drained Magpies side on April 1.

 

Calls for Shearer to be installed as boss have been overwhelming since the season ended, with first- team stars Habib Beye, Sebastien Bassong, Steven Taylor, Steve Harper and Nicky Butt all giving their seal of approval, while Toon heroes Bobby Moncur, David Ginola, Pavel Srnicek, Rob Lee, Mick Martin, John Anderson and John Beresford have also backed Big Al.

 

However, the Chronicle understands that the current regime are unlikely to pour any more cash into the beleaguered club, with Shearer now out of contract and Joe Kinnear also seeing his deal expire on the final day of the Premier League season.

Different types of wealth really. Ashley made nearly £2 billion off a selling a stack of shares for his shitty sports clothing store that was going down the pan. He pissed that away on ridiculous spread bets and other assorted guff. I'd imagine the Sultan has a couple of billion tied up in palaces and sold gold scimitars as well as his £1.1 billion. There's also the fact that you never really see many Sultan's in financial trouble whereas tubby southern wideboys who leak cash are ten a penny.

 

Anyway, this is no longer about just wealth. Ashley's main failure was the fact he had nee fucking idea how to run a club and by the time he'd dealt with the debt (which he should've really known about) he'd brought in Dennis Wise to piddle all over the place and collect his £1 million a year. Someone who is willing to back the manager enough so we can challenge for Europe when/if we eventually make it back to the top flight is good enough for me.

Aye a lot of Assley's was theoretical money, although he's only worth about £0.7 billion now (his wealth evaporation coinciding with his cash drying up for/grabbing from NUFC).
