Ayatollah Hermione 14074
Signed for Man United according to The Sun. EDIT: Should probably CNP the article. MICHAEL OWEN has agreed terms to join Manchester United. The out-of-contract striker will take a 50 per cent pay cut for a shock last chance to rescue his injury-plagued career. United boss Alex Ferguson contacted Owen, 29, on Tuesday and offered him £50,000 a week to join the champions - plus huge bonuses depending on appearances and goals. But Owen must pass a stringent medical, which could take place as early as today, before United put pen to paper. A source close to Owen confirmed: "It's incredible that one day Michael was contemplating a move to Hull and now Manchester United have come in. "This is just the boost he needed and now he is hoping that everything can be agreed." Fergie's shock move comes after United missed out on Lyon striker Karim Benzema, sold Cristiano Ronaldo for £80million and lost Carlos Tevez. Owen, axed by England boss Fabio Capello, started his career at United's hated rivals Liverpool. He became a free agent two days ago after his contract ran out at Newcastle. But not in his wildest dreams could he have imagined Fergie would come in. The only clubs being seriously linked with him were Stoke and Hull, while Everton were said to be weighing up their options and Greek side Olympiakos flatly denied any interest. Owen's agents have tried over the years to get Fergie to bite and he has refused. But he showed a flicker of interest in January and decided to wait to see how the summer transfer market unfolded. United have bought centre-half SEAN McGINTY, 16, from Charlton for £500,000. Edited July 3, 2009 by Stiva

Cid_MCDP 0
What truly baffles me is that he's spent 4 years being utterly shit and spectacularly injury prone with us which is just about 1 third of his proffesional career and he is still considered "world class" in so many circles, pundits, commentators, journalists all think hes still ace for some reason, it was through what should have been his peak as well 25-29, but if you take it out of his whole career and look at just his time with us 71 appearances and 26 goals in 4 years gets down to about 18 appearances 6-7 goals per season which is utter dog shit and its not like there is much else going on with his game other than scoring mind boggling Andrew, your avatar made me LOL. David Kelly 1260
If it means we don't have to pay him an extra month wages I'm happy. He looked finished second half of the season so I don't think it's a good move for manure (I'm sure their fans will be happy to see how well they are doing replacing pace, power, work rate etc of Ronaldo and Tevez!) but who knows he might have just really lost interest here, which even given his mega wages you could understand with the way Ashley has run the place. I would suspect his mate Shearer would be more than a bit pissed off if that turned out to be the case.
snakehips 0
this is completely and utterly sickening if truei fcking hate that little bollocks You should only be sick and angry if it turns out the last six months were a joke to him and he wasn't really trying, NOT that he's signing for Man U (or anyone else, for that matter). Who he signs for is irrelevant to us, and no Newcastle United supporter should bat an eyelid at his next move.
KingKev 0
I don't care whether he will score two or 20 goals next season - we've got far bigger matters to worry about.
Guest alex
Only thing I'd say is that people on the radio etc. were going on about Owen being the out-and-out goal scorer Man Utd have been lacking for some time but I don't think he can play that role any more. Other than that, meh.

Sadly though they haven't done what we did and stick him on a huge retainer on the basis of his past abilities

I think he's a better player than he's looked in the last 6 months (then again, I'm a better player than he's looked in the last 6 months) but he's still a shadow of his former self. I think if this is true he'll be a useful squad player more than anything else.

I'll give you 10-1 in fact ....I would if Capello wasn't in charge. He hasn't got Fergie's vision. Should've gone to specsavers. Can't see him getting in the squad even. The two reasons being I think Rooney, Gerrard and even Crouch are ahead in that withdrawn striker's role (Owen's best/'only' position these days) and international centre-backs would put him in their back pocket with ease if he played further up the pitch). I think Capello's right tbh.

Owen started the season with five goals in seven games (after a similar finish the season before), but the situation at the club just got worse and worse. He'd have been better off going to Everton IMO if he's primary objective is to play in the World Cup.
