Kid Dynamite 7025
Owen scored 26 goals in 71 games in the league in 4 years. Those are the real stats. Shearer scored more than that in 3/4 of one season and Given played that many games in 18months. Excuse me if I dont see the real value in the £41million outlay Wiki has it at 30 goals in 76 Also I thought it was £36m (£16m fee, £20m wages). £10m of which we got back in Insurance/compensation and £20m of which was repaid in the form of goals that kept us up last year. The comparison with Shearer isn't really fair either...He was playing in a far better team. His Souness era record is a better comparison when he couldn't reach 20 either. Shearer was miles fucking better than Owen too like, he cost just as much 10 years earlier. I got the stats of .com. Id believe them over wikipedia tbh Aaaah, "league" goals. I was looking at cup too...since he scored them and played in them. http://www.nufc.com/html/2008-09html/app-goals.html 10/32 http://www.nufc.com/html/2007-08html/app-goals.html 13/33 http://www.nufc.com/html/2006-07html/app-goals.html 0/3 http://www.nufc.com/html/2005-06html/app-goals.html 7/11 Total 30/79 His record was ok considering the quality of the team. Same with Martins, very few players actually score 20 plus goals a season these days, the problems of the last few years have been little to do with the strikers. The thing is, we've had our worst midfield for as long as I can remember since Owen joined with no real supply for the forwards or protection for the defenders. It's the midfielders who should be shouldering more of the blame, but it's easier for people to blame a striker (as happens with Adebayor and Bendtner at Arsenal despite their goal scoring records being quite good). Hadaway man, are you his agent or something. You cant possibly claim that £20million can be offset from his fee and wages cos he scored 10 goals in a season. If anything Given is the one the kept us up I'm not claiming any such thing, and of course Given was infinitely more useful than Owen. I'm just saying that his goalscoring record isn't that bad. How many would he have had to score to satisfy the 16 million we paid for him? 20 a season for most of you I'd wager, and it is close to damn well impossible to score that many goals with no support from a god awful midfield especially for such an out an out striker like Owen. If we had a midfield like one of the top four clubs and spent that sort of fee on him then I'd expect more goals, but you cant just expect him to magic goals out of the air somehow. For the record, I do think we paid too much for him, especially in terms of wages, but for me 16 million plus those crazy wages for Owen was better value than what we paid and have been paying for Geremi, Smith, Duff, Nolan, Butt, Collocini etc....most of the squad basically, yet most people still single out Owen. My post was aimed at happyface and the bit in bold
Ketsbaia 0
I also think it shows how shabbily run this club has been over the past few years that we've relied on MO for our goals, knowing full well his injury record.
luckyluke 2
I think Owen's more or less proved this year that unless it's put on a plate for him in the six yard box he's fuck all use, and even then it's not guaranteed he'll score. Yes you can blame the service from the midfield, but given that, it's even more important for a striker of his pedigree to bury the few vital chances that are created - ballsing it up when he was put through against Portsmouth, for example. He may do well at Man Utd as there'll be more created for him, but his ineffectiveness this year is as much due to his own failings as a player as it is to those of the team around him and comments such as "he can hold his head higher than most" are absolute nonsense in my eyes. Jimbo 175
I really couldn't give a shit, he never felt like our player, it just felt wrong from the moment he signed, and this isn't sour grapes or bitterness.

Tom 14011
Reds capture Owen Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has signed Michael Owen on a two year contract. The striker was out of contract, so no transfer fee is involved. Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Michael is a world class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question. Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish” Michael Owen said: "I had just begun to talk to other Clubs when out of the blue Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon, invited me to have breakfast with him next morning during which he told me that he wanted to sign me. I agreed without a moment's thought. This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands. I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here. I missed pre season last year and am pleased that I will be starting at Carrington from day one. I want to thank Sir Alex for the faith he has shown in me and I give him my assurance that I will repay him with my goals and performances”

"Bye EMO, I'm sure you'll put the same effort and captain leadership in for them that you did for us at the end of last season. Fop 1
I get the impression people try to outdo each other with the vehemence of their hatred though, rather than viwing it fairly and commenting with a level head. It happens quite a lot here. (quite often with hilarious results )

Also, for a boy who supposedly has Liverpool in his heart, isnt signing for Man United a bit of a kick in the teeth? spongebob toonpants 3996
If anything is certain in this world it is that Owen will score a fuckton of goals and be injury free. The only surprise will be not drawing Manu in one of the cups and having the midget rattle three or four in against us
