Park Life 71
Be interesting to see how many games his fragile body can manage next season about 20 he'll be used as an impact sub if at all. wonder what his wages will be eh? pay as you play? Seriously guys let's have a bit of reason on this. If he gets service he'll score goals.

As he obviously won't be their 1st choice striker, they can rap him in cotton wool to some extent so he may simply be able to avoid getting so many injuries more now. Happy Face 29
Amazing that Newcastle fans perpetuate the uninformed myths of the gutter press. By all means slag him off for showing no heart, not doing an interview after being relegated, or playing for England when fit and selected.... ....but is it fair to slag him off on fitness or goalscoring when only Butt and Taylor have made more appearances in the last 2 years and he's been our top scorer both those seasons? tinofbeans 91
he's a reserve striker that won't get many full games. for them. i reckon he could still score 1 in 2 with the service he gets there.... i read somewhere that the criac with man utd was that they weren't signing players over 26 years old? Happy Face 29
Martins played less games?/ Martins has produced diminishing returns year on year. First season he played 46 and scored 17 which made him popular. His popularity hasn't waned in the last 2 years despite dropping to 33, then 25 games in each respectively (So Owen's played 62 to Martins' 58). First Impressions last I guess...and Owen's was that of a crock. Edited July 3, 2009 by Happy Face

Kid Dynamite 7185
Owen scored 26 goals in 71 games in the league in 4 years. Those are the real stats. Shearer scored more than that in 3/4 of one season and Given played that many games in 18months. Excuse me if I dont see the real value in the £41million outlay

Excuse me if I dont see the real value in the £41million outlay Wiki has it at 30 goals in 76 Also I thought it was £36m (£16m fee, £20m wages). £10m of which we got back in Insurance/compensation and £20m of which was repaid in the form of goals that kept us up last year. The comparison with Shearer isn't really fair either...He was playing in a far better team. His Souness era record is a better comparison when he couldn't reach 20 either. Shearer was miles fucking better than Owen too like, he cost just as much 10 years earlier.

Happy Face 29
HF you have his poster on your wall or something? Nah. Last Newcastle player on my wall was Ruel Fox. I get the impression people try to outdo each other with the vehemence of their hatred though, rather than viwing it fairly and commenting with a level head. Like that kid the other day who said the appointment of Souness was a better decision than any of Mike Ashley's. He was a WUM, but people are getting that silly about Owen now. His time here was definitely disappointing (for him as well as us) given his ability and history of scoring goals. But he can hold his head higher than most who were in that changing room last season...and the season before.
trophyshy 7084
I hate him the most! Me Me Me! Not really, I'm just very disappointed by his tenure and body language this year. He could only hold his head higher on stilts tbh. That's what this horse and helicopter obsession is. Small man syndrome.

Same with Martins, very few players actually score 20 plus goals a season these days, the problems of the last few years have been little to do with the strikers. The thing is, we've had our worst midfield for as long as I can remember since Owen joined with no real supply for the forwards or protection for the defenders. It's the midfielders who should be shouldering more of the blame, but it's easier for people to blame a striker (as happens with Adebayor and Bendtner at Arsenal despite their goal scoring records being quite good). If anything Given is the one the kept us up I'm not claiming any such thing, and of course Given was infinitely more useful than Owen. I'm just saying that his goalscoring record isn't that bad. How many would he have had to score to satisfy the 16 million we paid for him? 20 a season for most of you I'd wager, and it is close to damn well impossible to score that many goals with no support from a god awful midfield especially for such an out an out striker like Owen. If we had a midfield like one of the top four clubs and spent that sort of fee on him then I'd expect more goals, but you cant just expect him to magic goals out of the air somehow. For the record, I do think we paid too much for him, especially in terms of wages, but for me 16 million plus those crazy wages for Owen was better value than what we paid and have been paying for Geremi, Smith, Duff, Nolan, Butt, Collocini etc....most of the squad basically, yet most people still single out Owen. Ketsbaia 0
I don't hate Owen. He never acted in an unprofessional manner and scored some important goals for us. I don't believe his heart was 100% in the club but show me a player whose is nowadays? All he is guilty of really is losing form at the worst possible time and being given a king's ransom in cash by the previous owners. We knew his injury record was shite when we signed him but you can't account for the broken toe and fucked ligaments. They were freak injuries. He was and I believe still is a good player, arguably the best one we'll see at this club for some years yet. He probably could've done more in the past few months but he's not the only one.
