Guest Hova
Tin hat etc but I think if we can get Barton to take a pay cut, he can repay his debt to us by staying for a year. He'd be the best midfielder in the league

themags 0
Any players wanting to stay (and they can't be many) must realise they would need to take a massive wage drop. Our top earners in this division can be no more than £20k a week.
Barney 0
Ha ha, next we'll have Smith, Cacapa and Geremi saying they'll stay and fight for the cause! Shame there was no fight in them for last season. Cockrings know full well they'll get nothing close to the money they're on elsewhere.
acrossthepond 896
As I've said before, I don't want another one of those players who appeared yesterday (I'll qualify it to include keeping Harper who can only do so much, S. Taylor who cared and will be a top Championship player and Enrique who looked vaguely bothered when he came on) to play for NUFC again. So toss all of them. Beye and Bassong are the only two who didn't play (moot point anyway because they'll both be off) and maybe Carroll, that I'd want to keep. The rest can all get on their bikes because the gravy train has left SJP.
Asprilla 96
I really hope Enrique stays and yeah, I'm waiting for Alan Smith's wet lipped promise to stay and repay the fans while collecting 3 former NUFC staff's annual salaries a week.
Craig 6700
If we have any chance of retaining Beye and Bassong then we must. But if they make it clear they want to go, sell them and sell them early so we can find suitable replacements. The likes of Duff, Guthrie, Enrique, S Taylor, Carroll even perhaps Nicky Butt should be retained. The rest can go IMO.

There were players in our final Division One campaign who were horrendous - Liam O'Brien & Kevin Brock for two who a large number thought should be shelved in the summer. They were retained and became pivotal in our return to the top flight. I'm not saying that Butt is going to do the same and if you look back I do say 'perhaps'.. I don't think we should necessarily write him off just yet mind.

I don't think we should necessarily write him off just yet mind. I saw your "perhaps" that's why I said "just for the thought". Sticking to players like Butt has been a major reason for the demise. He's past it. He only lives of Mr. Viagra's appraisal some years ago. It's nice that he looks committed on the pitch, but his stupid fouls and atrocious passing are one of the main reasons we got relegated. Not only that a player of his calibre is destroying any creativity in the side, but he's also been costing goals on a regular basis for years. That won't change in the Championship. It's not about keeping a Nicky Butt, but about finding a new Rob Lee tbh.
Craig 6700
It's not about keeping a Nicky Butt, but about finding a new Rob Lee tbh. Absolutely. But as the same time, we can't flush everything out of the club and start from scratch. I think we'll do well, but succeed in keeping Guthrie. But if we were to keep one other midfielder, I'd retain Butt instead of Barton...
Jusoda Kid 1
Butt is totally finished imo, his will to win is there but his legs have gone and as Isegrim says he's a bit of a liability Edited May 25, 2009 by Wacky Jnr
JonGoodwyn 1
In an ideal world i'd keep Beye - Taylor - Bassong - Enrique ? - ? - Guthrie - Duff Viduka - (possibly Martins) Desperately need cover for fullbacks, a right midfielder who can cross and take on players (preferably two) at least 2 new centre midfielders who can put in a good through ball and have the legs to track back and defend as well as go forward. I think we all know that already though
smoggeordie 0
I spoke to Guthrie pre match yesterday and said "Will you stay, even if we go down." His reply was "I hope so. I'd only go if they didn't want me."
