Slow Horses is magnificent and gets better and better

@Renton start it immediately

Watched the first two seasons now. I think 2 was a slight improvement. Really enjoying it so far. Glad to hear it’s been renewed for another couple of seasons as I don’t think it’ll take me long to get through 3 & 4.

Dunno where to put this really but thought I'd drop it here. It's bascially a tech demo for AI graphics but is also somewhat poignant and sad for all trekkies.

I know most on this board aren't massively fussed about games but honestly the level of graphical fidelity from tools like Unreal Engine 5 is incredible, every year it gets harder to distinguish reality from GGI graphics or deep fakes. As usual, this will be for good and bad.

Watched the Lucan documentary mentioned a few pages back.

Firstly, poor bastard- adopted to then find out your bio mam was murdered by Lucan.

No wonder the bloke is a bit messed up.

The end left me more than a little frustrated.
The argument that Neil put forward for it being Lucan was just as valid as the argument against, I thought, but, presumably since the old fella hasn’t been nicked, there’s more compelling proof to keep him at liberty.

Surely DNA would settle the issue?

Say Nothing

True story of two sisters who were in the IRA and the disappearing of a mother of 10 in the Troubles

I thought it was superb, though I'm sure it's portrayal won't be uniformly popular

The performance of the actors who played the two young sisters were stunning. The actor who played Gerry Adams was unrecognisable from dumb Marco in the Responder

It seemed quite an honest account to me, I read somewhere it was shown as more of a class struggle than a religous one, not a point of view you see very often on British TV

I followed it straight away with "I Dolours" that interviews one of the protagonists

Just finished it last night, followed it with The Miami Showband massacre (a re-watch from ages ago) just to see the other side of the coin.

I finished the first season of Silo - I really liked the double triple counter bluff of what's outside.

And Rebecca Ferguson - definitely.

So, Mrs. F. and I are watching the latest episode of The Jackal.

Events in the story prompted a minor disagreement where, obviously, I’m right and she’s wrong

It’s spoiling nothing to say that the Jackal is ex-military.

I stated that what he’s doing now-being a paid assassin, is, from a purely moral P.O.V., absolutely no different to what he did in the Army- he’s paid money to kill targets given to him by his employers.

Mrs. F. disagrees. On what basis, I don’t know, as she’s just said “ But it’s WRONG!”

… which is a different argument entirely.

Who’s right, and why is it me?

You're

sexy pig GIF

That was going to be the Trump "wrong" gif but when I pressed the gif button this came up and I thought you'd appreciate it.

You're wrong because there is a moral difference between serving your country and being a hired gun. You're acting in the national interest, not your own.

Mrs MF can thank me later. Christ, that came out wrong.

There have been no wars or conflicts since 1945 where "National interest" has been anything other than serving the interests of the establishment and the rich and absolutely fuck all to do with making the world a safer place for the average citizen.

So I'm with MF.

You live in a relatively free prosperous country and enjoy a high standard of living alongside millions of others. I'd say "winning" the cold war is quite important in that. Like it or not, we live in a world of nation states and I want the interests of mine protected.

You’re kind of missing the point I was making to Mrs. F. though- a military sniper is paid money to kill targets given to him by his employer.

A hitman/assassin is also paid money to kill targets given to him by his employers.

The political or ethical reasons for whatever conflict the military lad is in are as irrelevant as the reasons the assassin’s employer want the target dead.

Neither one is morally superior to the other.

Where they stand on the moral scale is an entirely different question, but my point is that they are essentially the same.

I'd possibly even argue that a freelance assassin has more freedom to be morally superior than someone in the military tbh. A hitman says no to a job because it's against his own ethical code then the job goes to someone else - no biggie. A marine sniper refuses to take a shot his career could (and most likely is) ruined.

Both still kill people for money, but the "bad" one has much less pressure to accept a job that doesn't sit right with him than the "good" one. So in that case which one is truly bad here?

Both is probably the answer, but still.....
