Park Life 71
I borrowed a friends accoustic and then after a few days it went out of tune, so I left it for him to come round and re-tune it as I didn't want to meddle with an old guitar (that he tunes in a special way). Now he's saying it's untunable and broken or summat...Is this possible?
Tom 14026
This sounds dodgy from the start . With it being acoustic and old it depends how old and what kind of tuners are on the headstock. Are the strings Nylon or steel? Clean or dirty/rusty? It sounds like a dodgy old knackered thing if he borrowed you it and didn't leave a tuner. It is pretty old like. Is he being silly?
Tom 14026
Very much so. By special way I take he means 'by ear', e.g the guitar is old and fucked so if he tried to tune it to proper pitch the strings would snap or with steel strings possibly the guitar. I wouldn't worry about it too much as these guitars go out of tune all the time. Something like This and a £18 tuner would sort you if you are interested in getting started playing acoustic. Yeah he does it by ear.... The reason I'm slightly concerned is that his girlfriend started saying someone (ie me) must have sat on it. If I'd have sat on it I'd have just said so which is what I replied. Further he says the tuning mechanism doesn't keep it in tune for any length of time anymore....Eh?? Nb he's a bit of a muso and is getting emotional cause it was his first guitar. Summink wrong with all these fucking musos. **Looks like a nice guitar in the link..Will get mesel one. Tom 14026
Perhaps not that specific one but there's a few around that range that would suit your needs. However if it's his first guitar and it's a nylon strung classical, chances are he paid between £20-50 for it and it's a piece of crap anyway. Nylon strung guitars at that price generally have poor tuning stability, even a £300 boutique parlour classical will have reasonably poor tuning stability as when most people play them they don't really put too much pressure on the strings. I doubt his guitar stayed in tune for any time anyway. I wouldn't worry about it, he's talking shite.

Nyff 0
What guitar is it btw? Old Acoustics are sometimes very schmexy! In fact I have a 40 Year old Yamaha with me at the moment, although I am looking out for a new acoustic to use more generally day-to-day... JonGoodwyn 1
Maybe the nut got broken? The little plastic(usually) bit where the headstock meets the fretboard, its probably white.

Tom 14026
If haven't noticed any obvious damage then I doubt you can be liable. The guitar is too light to damage properly without really knowing you've done it. To get the correct force and angle to damage the hardware sufficiently would take a noticeable effort. Tom 14026
One more thing - I assume the guitar hasn't suffered a big change in climate? Geographically or in the way you have stored it?
