Guest Stevie
Not even an argument, Peter Beardsley. Seriously if our current team just added a 29 year old Peter Beardsley, we'd be about eighth, a player of his type and ability is what the playing side is crying out for at the moment. I don't even know if anyone like him exists in this country anymore.
Guest alex
Beardsley by an absolute mile.
tinofbeans 91
beardo was a true great wasn't he. reading bobby robsons biography recently it was clear how highly he rated him. 2 footed, quick , and with a load of tricks, and a very good goalscoring ability. Â now if we'd have had him and shearer playing together when they were both younger (and when shearer had more speed over the ground), we'd have had some kind of forward line. Â I personally rated les ferdinand very highly as well. his strike rate was excellent and we sold him 2 years too soon.
Guest alex
SBR rated Mark Hately higher than him going into Mexico '86 though

Billy Whitehurst 958
Paul Gascoigne. Â Beardsley is my second favourite.

You forgot ball winner, the amount of times he would track back, tackle and win the ball and build up the play again. His work rate was phenomenal.  Beardsley is my choice. Still, although it was a lucky break that Pedro was given the role of partnering Lineker against Poland, everyone needs a bit of luck like that now and again. A bit like four years later and the sweeper system. There's no way Robson had even thought about that before the tournament.
NJS 4446
Beardsley obviously. Â My favourite "shit but gave his all" player was Kenny Wharton.
tinofbeans 91
despite what he said. in his bio, he mentioned it wasn't a players mutiny that got mark wright playing through the middle as sweeper. i'm not saying wright was the difference mind, but he helped. Holden McGroin 6917
Asprilla for me. More of cult thing than being the best player. I just used to love watching him when on form. Unplayable.

Big Onion 0
Supermac  Still one of the very best English strikers I've ever seen. Pace, power, scored with either foot or his head, in or outside the box. Should have had fifty England caps all day long.

Guest alex
Obviously some of those mentioned so far (Beardsley, shearer) but P Albert was always a favourite of mine I was going to mention him. He was class. Proper player (and I don't mean in the Souness sense of the word).
