Shearer the manager

Don't know about anyone else but I am already pleasantly surprised by the difference at Newcastle with having Shearer as manager. Some very good interviews with him on the journal website ( at work so can't copy and paste - maybe someone else can).

Like what he's done about making the injured players stay all day and how this is having a dramatic effect on rehabilitation!

Also like the honesty about matters that is coming through rather than the bullshit. For example with obama, had shearer not been their he would probably now be out for the season, however al has told him that he wants him to play through the pain barrier.

Regardless of where we end up, I really hope we can hang onto him . Worth a read.

I think the stuff he's done is a damning indictment on the way it was under Kinnear then Hughton rather than anything amazing on his part. That's not a pop at him btw.

I like the way he stops the media circus in it's tracks like he did yesterday:

Journalist: "Shay Given states that they should have offered you the job earlier, would you have accepted if they had?"

Shearer: "All 'ifs and buts'. They didn't offer me it so it's a pointless question.

Journalist: "If they had would you have tried to hold onto Shay?"

Shearer: "Again another 'if'"

Makes a refreshing change from the Kinnear intsamatic bullshit device ®

I'll judge him on the results on the pitch.

That may be an unfair judgement, considering the position he inherited, although it may well be all the judgement he can expect.

It would be a very unfair judgement.

Alex is right about how bad it obviously was which quite frankly is scandulous.

I think shearer demonstrates that being a good ( not great) manager is not rocket science. Get a lot of the basics right, surround yourself with good people and buy decent players. Naturally we will have to wait and see for the latter.

What has happened in the past is irrelevant now. Shearer has been brought in to keep us up, if he doesn't then he has failed.

Yeah but it's not that simple, is it? I know what his objective is but that doesn't necessarily mean failure to achieve that means he hasn't done a good job under the circumstances. The past isn't irrelevant because it's the reason he's here.

I like everything I've heard about the work Shearer and Dowie are doing behind the scenes, especially the emphasis on professionalism and fitness. The bottom line though is that it's first and foremost a short-term apointment to get us out of the shit. It's all about whether they can improve us on the pitch for the next six games and put enough points on the board to beat the drop, otherwise it hasn't worked.

Either way it'll be far too early to make judgements about whether Shearer can cut it as a manager.

I think regardless whether he "saves" us or not, I am now Adam ant that I would like him to remain for the next 5 years.

Let's go into pre season on the right foot.

Naturally this will all depend on what assurances he gets from Ashley, but that's a different story all together.

For the time being the past is irrelevant, all that matters is the here and now. I'm not saying that it hasn't affected the situation we're currently in.

Shearer was brought in with one target to aim for and that is to keep us up. No matter how we do it, that is the goal. If we go down then he will have failed. It mightn't necessarily be all his fault but he will have failed in what he came here to do.

:icon_lol:

I've been impressed with him, although like alex says, you can't believe that the changes he's made were needed in the first place. :D

I like how he's clearly batting away all the hype that could have been made about him coming.

ewerk, Shearer might think that but you seriously have to question the motives of the fuckwits that own/run the club and question how much it has to do with season ticket sales and PR.

He'll deserve enormous credit if he keeps us up given the circumstances though. I'd only be really disappointed in him if the performace of the team doesn't improve. I've always thought he'd make a good manager mind fwiw, but in any case 8 games isn't enough to tell.

Shearer has today said that we will go out to win this game from the very "first minute".

Sounds like attack, attack, attack attack attack!

with Stroller and Duke(Of Greggs)

attack attack slow down for a bit, attack miss attack, wander off, attack

:D

Mind you it was more than enough games to tell Souness and Allardyce weren't up to the task.

Not really, both started alright iirc, at least in terms of results. Mind, one game was too much for Souness but that was largely because of his managerial history and the fact the man is a complete cunt.

Did they though?

I seem to remember the results being ok(ish) but the football being sh!te, with the usual sound bites of 'give them time to sort* their team'!

Maybe I'm just bitter like Tom.

*replace sort with build
