Traveling the USA

I have been working part time in various places since I left school and I have also been studying. I have managed to save up a bit of cash for a car and insurance and all that crap. But for the past few days I have been strongly considering going to America, by that I don't mean for a week and just going to one place. I wanna travel around America and see what its like as its always been a dream of mine to go and see the world, main reason I applied for the Navy too.

Now I have been wondering how I can go about this, I could just book a hotel in each state week after week and travel that way, but I don't wanna do that I don't think I will get to see as much as I would like to.

This leads me asking you for help and advice on what could be the best way to go over and see the USA. I have been told that some travel agents do group holidays, in which they put together a group of people and take you over to the USA, this sounds like a cracking idea to me but does anyone know how to go about this?

Trek america looks like a good company to travel with like they do trips as long as 64 days looping right round America I think it even goes into Canada. I'm not sure what America is like if you go on your own travelling I know Australia is piss easy to meet people and get into groups 2 of my mates are currently over in Oz, I'm going to the US on camp america where I'll work on camp for 2 month then I get time to travel after but I think applications have closed for that this year.

Oh btw I think trek America operate in groups of 13-14 people so that's a canny group and you travel in a 13 seater van with a trailer to put all your gear in.

Strict too on the drinking age. If you stick to both coasts then you can drive from most places in a day.

Boston

New York

Philadelphia

Washington DC

Columbia

Atlanta

Memphis

New Orlean

Tampa

Miami

Key West

Some of the more out of the way places are well worth a visit. Jack Daniels distillery was brilliant in Tennessee, theres a good NASA museum in Alabama too.

Heres the route I took. best 6 months of my life mate, id definately recommend it

Dynamite mate how much did you spend?

I did it through MLS camps. 3 months working in a school near new york coaching the kids teams then 3 months touring the southern states in a different city each week doing summer camps.

Flights, cars and petrol paid for and accomodation was free with the familys of the kids I was coaching.

If you can be arsed to do your level 1 coaching badge its a good way of seeing the states for free. No guarantee as to where you get placed though. Some lucky gits get to spend 3 months in Hawaii!!

The better half and I are gradually working out the details of a 5th anniversary trip that needs to take in NYC, San Francisco, Nashville and Dollywood.

You big stereotype!

Shouldn't that be Noshville?

Just visit the East Coast bawan man, you're wasting your time anywhere else. Everything west of Pennsylvania could sink into the ocean tomorrow and I wouldn't bat an eye.

Start at NYC (forget Boston, it's a shithole) and work your way down to Florida.

Kurdistan isn't a country yet and probably never will be (argument for another thread I know), but you're better off telling people you're from there as they'll have no idea where it (supposedly) is.

If you go to Australia you can get a 12 month working visa which allows you to get temporary jobs while you're there (upto 3 months per job) which obviously makes it more affordable.

Plus, as you say it's geared up for the traveller so it's a piece of piss. Wish I'd checked out NZ and the South Pacific when I was there too.

My stepsister's doing this at the minute. She's been there since September and has done loads of fruit picking/sorting etc. Shite work but it pays (much like my own job  ).

I'd give that shite a miss tbh. Loads of jobs like barwork and so on are easy to get and much less strenuous. Also those jobs tend to be in the middle of nowhere.

Fair point. There's no way she could do that in Sydney or somewhere like that

She should be careful like. My sis worked with someone who got skin cancer from (almost certainly) fruit picking in Australia.

My dad & stepmam went over to meet up with her last month and gave her a lecture though, apparently the people/company she went through were very good and warned everyone about the dangers so it sounds like they're all pretty clued up.
