peasepud 59
TOON hero David Kelly has reassured Newcastle fans that they are in safe hands with his old team-mate Chris Hughton. Kelly is part of United folklore for scoring a goal against Portsmouth in 1992 that saved Kevin Keegan’s side from dropping into the third division. This is the closest United have come to being relegated since that season. And Kelly admits that, two points adrift of safety with eight games remaining, things look bleak for the side he helped into the top flight back 16 years ago. But he believes that former Republic of Ireland colleague Hughton is the man to lead United out of trouble. “I am surprised to see Newcastle in the position they are in, and it must be a big concern for everyone in the city. I loved my time at Newcastle – it’s a fantastic place to play football and I can’t imagine them not being in the Premier League,” he said. “But they’ve got a chance of getting out of it. I still stay in touch with Chris, who I know from our Ireland days, and he’s a top guy and one of the most professional men you could possibly hope to meet. “He’s a top coach and I think everyone in the game knows that. “No-one is hurting more than he is at the situation Newcastle find themselves in, and he is working day and night to get them out of it. “It’s not an ideal situation with Joe being out and, of course, everyone wishes him all the best. If he comes back then that’s great – but I know that Newcastle are in capable hands with Chris there.” Kelly is currently number two to Billy Davies at Nottingham Forest, fighting a relegation battle of their own in the second tier. If they stay up, Kelly is hoping there will be no reunion with his former employees. “The people there have supported that club through thick and thin and I’m sure they will get behind the team in the run-in,” he said. “When we stayed up in 1992 we had superb support, and it was the same the next year when we went up. That kind of backing lifts you and players react to that kind of thing.”
Fop 1
I am surprised to see Newcastle in the position they are in With that statement he undermines any other opinion he might have on NUFC. Unless he means he's surprised we're doing so well, in which case.
