Happy Face 29
Unfortunately he'd forgotten about the comedy element of it. Best British comedy show at the moment i think, not that there's much worth comparing it to. The majority agree with you given his dwindling ratings....but then the majority have got Horne and Corden a second series. There's times when his repetetive drone doesn't pay off so much ("you know the rappers on the the top of the pops?", "You remember the Woolworths and the MFI?" - though I still get a giggle from his audacity) But there's times where it perfectly nails the ridiclous "Delboy fell through the bar, and Trigger....pulled a funny face". It's best when it's material he's been touring a few years like....the credit crunch stuff probably hasn't been honed as much.

I'm not surprised his ratings are dwindling and to be fair he'd probably be expecting it and not that bothered as he always stands by doing things his way knowing its not populist or serving the masses and good on him, somebody should be like that on TV. He's always had problems with the way TV people interfere with your work and dictate what you can and can't do and its why he only came back with this done his way and needless to say it isn't that popular with the average TV viewer in this country! But he's always going to struggle as you either get him and are a fan or don't and think he's an annoying smug bastard who isn't that funny! Happy Face 29
Comedian Stewart Lee has launched an extraordinary attack on Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond, saying he wishes he had been ‘decapitated’ in the high-speed crash that nearly cost him his life. The 41-year-old comedian, star of BBC2’s critically acclaimed Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, accuses Hammond and his Top Gear colleagues of being ‘bullies’ and jokes about the car crash that left Hammond suffering brain damage. Lee was at the same school as Hammond – he was two years ahead of the presenter – though the source of the animosity remains unclear. Yesterday, neither of the BBC men were prepared to discuss their days at Solihull School, a £9,400-a-year public school in Birmingham, amid speculation that their shared school experience may have prompted Lee’s diatribe. Hammond, 39, nicknamed ‘The Hamster’ by fans, suffered brain injuries three years ago while driving a jet-propelled Vampire dragster that flipped and crashed at about 280mph. He made a remarkable recovery after the crash, and has gone on to present other TV programmes, including BBC1’s Total Wipeout gameshow, and Brainiac on Sky1. Lee spends 20 minutes telling audiences about his dislike of Hammond in his show If You Prefer A Milder Comedian, Please Ask For One, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and he incorporates their schooldays into his routine. During one show last week, Lee said: ‘I wish he had died in that crash and that he had been decapitated and that his head had rolled off in front of his wife and that a jagged piece of metal debris from the car had got stuck in his eye and blinded him. ‘And then his head had rolled on a few more yards into a pool of boiling oil and that his head had retained just enough neural capacity for him to be able to think “ooh, this is bit hot" before the whole thing exploded into tiny pieces.’ Later in the routine, he said: ‘I wish Richard Hammond HAD died and I wish he had been decapitated. Of course, it’s a joke. But coincidentally it’s also what I believe.’ Lee has made no secret of his dislike for Top Gear in episodes of his BBC2 show, which is watched by one million viewers. He has characterised Hammond and his colleagues, Jeremy Clarkson and James May, as ‘bullies’. An audience member in Edinburgh said: ‘It was very funny and it is his stock-in-trade, complaining about his bete noires. 'But I don’t imagine that Hammond would be happy to hear it. He told a joke which he said was made-up, about how he had saved Hammond from some school bullies, but you couldn’t help wondering if there was something more to it.’ Fellow students recalled how Lee was a star pupil, with a particular aptitude for English. His headmaster, Philip Griffiths, said: ‘He was a very able English scholar and had a remarkable way with words. He was involved in drama, arts and literature and he was chairman of the sixth-form group which we had at that time.’ Hammond’s progress at the school was less remarkable, although he left the school early after his family moved to Ripon, North Yorkshire, where he attended Ripon Grammar. Last night, Hammond did not want to comment on Lee’s comedy routine, although he is believed to view Lee’s jokes as being ‘in bad taste’. Lee was embroiled in controversy four years ago, as co-writer of the musical Jerry Springer: The Opera, which led to protests by religious pressure group Christian Voice. Lee said before his Edinburgh show on Friday night: ‘I don’t want to talk about it. They do jokes on Top Gear don’t they? Treat it as a joke.’ His spokeswoman said: ‘I don’t think they knew each other at school.’ Best Daily Mail article I've ever read. I'll not link to the shitrag. Happy Face 29
The comments are an even greater source of comedy gold... this man should be banned for life- karen, newbury, 30/8/2009 6:08 it's a disgrace that someone like this no talent comedian can say something like this and not be arrested. surely there should be a ban on the arts to some degree? we can't have people running round making threats like this. obviously this so called comedian is not joking one bit, and has a chip on his shoulder or is jealous of hammond's success and amazing tv shows.- Danny, London, England, 31/8/2009 6:25 I'm only 14 but i still think this is really horrible and beyond the limit of stewart lee!! he must be sick to think that this is funny when in fact it is disgusting. how would he feel if someone said that about him? ive read richard hammond's on the edge book and it just shows how far richard has came since the accident. i think stewart lee should be banned from actually being a so called "comedian".- sophie, spalding lincolnshire england,

Meenzer 15560
Clearly insecure that the suspiciously similarly-named Richard Herring has had a better Edinburgh than him this year.

Happy Face 29
Didn't realise a new series started a fortnight ago. First 2 episodes are on iplayer.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01129hk His last series was mostly material from his old DVD's but I'd not seen any of the material on these shows before. Papa Lazaru 0
Thought the first two episodes have been top quality, and prefer the chat with Iannucci too some of last series sketches with just the one big pay off sketch at the end. It won't change anything to who likes/dislikes it though, you either get him and go with his at times deliberately antagonistic style of delivery pushing it right to the point where people should be annoyed and then brining it back or you don't. Same with people who think he really is that arrogant and smug/superior when its all part of the act and how he crafts his material. I've always been a fan, but can see why he can put other people off and was surprised he got a second series, much as he was!

Meenzer 15560
Doesn't merit its own thread, but this'll do - repeats of Armando Iannucci's terrific Facts And Fancies are happening right now on your actual BBC radio. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b007jrlb/Armando_Iannucci_Facts_and_Fancies_A_Life_at_the_Opera
