Jimbo 172 Posted April 2, 2009 Share Posted April 2, 2009 Lewis Hamilton and McLaren have been stripped of their podium finish and all points at the Australian Grand Prix. The sport's world governing body said they were excluded "for providing evidence deliberately misleading to the stewards at the hearing on March 29." A post-race hearing promoted Hamilton from fourth to third after Trulli was penalised for passing the Englishman while the safety car was out. The Toyota of Trulli has been reinstated to third place. Hamilton was summoned by stewards on Thursday to discuss what the FIA, motorsport's governing body, described as "a new element" of evidence. It was not clear what the new evidence was, although it could involve pit-to-car radio conversations between the team and driver. The yellow safety flags came out at Melbourne after a collision between Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica in his BMW Sauber. Trulli, who was demoted to 12th, slid off the track and was passed by Hamilton but the Toyota driver said he had little choice but to overtake the Briton again. "When the safety car came out towards the end of the race, Lewis Hamilton passed me but soon after he suddenly slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road," he said. "I thought he had a problem so I overtook him as there was nothing else I could do." Hamilton had told Speed TV after the race that Trulli went wide onto the grass at the second to last corner. "I was forced to go by. I slowed down as much as I could. I was told to let him back past, I don't know if that's the regulations, and if it isn't, then I should have really had third," said the Briton. Toyota had said after the race that they would make a protest but dropped that on Wednesday because they felt it had no chance of succeeding. Instead he says hes sorry but then puts all the blame on Dave Ryan. What a great 'team' effort! He's not stupid he can make his own decisions. For me, all this taints how brilliant the first race was. Im more looking forward to the BTCC this weekend, Plato has a last minute drive too. It's not necessarily the thunderstorms Dr Ken, it's the failing light. They knew it was going to be dark by the time 2 hours came up but still they persued it - all so Jonny European could watch the race at a 'normal' time. He fails to realise that anyone who is half a fan of the sport would get up to watch it regardless of what time it's on! As for the thing with John Button & DC, I think it's all fun and games. DC is big mates with Jenson and I wouldn't be surprised if DC, being a practical joker, hadn't done something to Button Snr... Don't think it was anything sinister. The FIA is losing its grip, surely they can rule the first two races 'pre-season friendlies' to give the teams a chance to adapt to the new rules. Button hits back at 'bitter' Briatore Jenson Button has hit out at Renault team boss Flavio Briatore after the Italian criticised the Brawn GP drivers on Thursday. Briatore, who was angry at the FIA's decision to rule the double-decker diffusers as legal, suggested the Brawn GP team will dominate the championship thanks to an unfair advantage. "The drivers in our teams have been and are world champions, while the championship is now fought between a driver who was almost retired and another one who is a good guy but a paracarro (Italian saying for being as slow as a milepost at the side of a road)," Briatore told Gazzetta dello Sport. "I don't know where credibility has ended up with all this. To make up the gap we have to those teams is impossible." On Friday, Button responded to Briatore, and said the Italian should remember that he tried to hire him for his own team this year. "Unless he is at the front of F1, I am sure [he thinks] any team [being there] hurts the credibility of F1," Button told reporters in Shanghai. "He also needs to remember that he tried to employ me for this year, so..." Button added: "He is obviously a very angry man after the diffuser issues and he is obviously very disappointed that they haven't produced a car that is as competitive as ours. "We have produced a very competitive car because of the work force we have back at Brackley and you cannot take it away from them - it is very unfair to say that. "They have worked very, very hard in very difficult circumstances and it is very, very unfair for Flavio to comment as he has just because he is a little bit bitter - he should also not forget he tried to employ me for this season." When asked what was his team's response to Briatore's comments, Button said: "Laughing, basically." Team-mate Rubens Barrichello said Briatore was a "bad loser". "I think that is stupid. Really. What a comment. If we all think that we need Ferrari and McLaren to win, why are the others here? "I really think that because we have a white car and some people are not able to go as fast as us....this is what is good about the sport. They are trying to make the same engine for everybody…so do you think Ferrari is always going to be on top? "There are plenty of good people in the paddock and plenty of bad losers."
