Harry Redknapp is certainly no fan of the UEFA Cup, and if he secretly harbours hopes

of going out of the competition in the last 32, then Heurelho Gomes is the man he should be thanking.

The format of the competition is Redknapp’s pet hate and midweek trips to eastern

Europe are by no means his preferred destination, especially when they come at the start of a gruelling fixture pile-up for Spurs.

Gomes, however, has saved his manager a major selection headache for next week’s return leg against Shakhtar Donetsk, three days ahead of the Carling Cup final.

With Spurs performing admirably to keep their Ukrainian opponents at bay, Gomes

intervened as only he can, coming unconvincingly to collect Jadson’s free kick and allowing substitute, Yevgen Seleznov to score just seconds after coming on.

Jadson then added a second to leave Spurs likely to be concentrating solely on Premier League survival once the meeting with Manchester United has been taken

True to his word, Redknapp opted for a patchwork starting XI with a smattering of first teamers, a few players who more often than not warm the bench and a 17-year-old

debutant in Dean Parrett.

Pleased with his team’s display, Redknapp made no bones about the fact that his

selection will be even more watered down for the return leg.

The good news for Redknapp is that at least there is a chance his side will need to travel no further than Birmingham for the next round if Aston Villa can get past CSKA Moscow and Spurs can mount an unlikely comeback on home turf.

Given the sub-zero temperatures in the RSC Olympiyskiy Stadium, there were probably not too many complaints from those big guns left behind watching from the comfort of their living rooms.

Describing the pitch as worse than Hackney Marshes would be doing a major disservice to the east London playing fields, the strange yellow lines running across its width making it look more fit for American football.

Unsurprisingly the home side looked more comfortable with the conditions - although the bobbles did little to help their passing game, either - despite not having played a competitive match since beating Barcelona in the Nou Camp three months ago.

Half-chances came and went for Razvan Rat, skipper Dario Srna and Oleksandr Gladkyy, but Spurs were not overstretched by the task of making it to the break without their defence being breached.

It took until the 32nd minute for Spurs to register their first effort on the opposition goal

when Giovani dos Santos, the much hyped Mexico international making his first start

under Redknapp, was only able to find the side-netting.

Tottenham’s continued dogged resistance in the second half started to get on the locals’ backs as their team struggled to make any further inroads, no doubt to the delight of the some 200 intrepid away fans.

Hearts were in mouths when Fernadinho blasted a free-kick just over the bar but, with

Redknapp sensing his side had the measure of their opponents, he chose to introduce Darren Bent for the extremely disappointing Dos Santos with 20 minutes to go in an attempt to sneak an away goal.

But it was Shakhtar who finally got the goal their persistence probably deserved. Didier

Zokora fouled Willian and although Jadson’s free-kick was dangerous, Gomes was far too casual in coming for the ball, allowing Seleznov to send a glancing header past him.

Jadson then added the gloss to the scoreline with two minutes remaining, the Brazilian allowed to waltz through Spurs’ defence before placing an angled strike into the corner.

At 2-0, Spurs now have a mountain to climb and it is up to the kids to mount the comeback.

The Tottenham big names have another night in front of the television next Thursday.

The UEFA Cup was beneath us. It's the best you'll ever have. Once you've had Moet you don't want Lambrusco. We were shit 2004-2007, played about 40 games and lost 3 in the UEFA if that doesn't tell you how wank a competition it is and was I don't know what does. I'd be content coming 8th till we can seriously compete for fourth, because the UEFA is a shite competition for clubs like you and Everton to get giddy about.

 

The point wasn't about us though it was about Tottenham, we were taking 5 and 6000 to places like Frankfurt. You can't compare with us, but your pathetic support is the issue not what a shit competition it is.
