I have a feeling they will be playing.. Souness has said that he won't be taking any risks and will be playing his strongest side..

We've turned a corner, says Slade

By Paul Fletcher

Grimsby boss Russell Slade

Grimsby manager Russell Slade thinks his team have turned a corner after a disappointing few seasons. The Mariners suffered successive relegations after dropping out of the Championship in 2003 but are second in the League Two table.

"We have turned a big corner - it has been hard but certainly we are on the up," Slade told BBC Sport. Grimsby also beat Spurs in the Carling Cup and Slade added: "What that has done for the town is fantastic."

The Mariners slipped up last weekend, losing 1-0 to leaders Wycombe.

But Grimsby's form has been excellent, with fine League performances allied to their cup wins over Derby and Spurs.

Grimsby 1-0 Tottenham

"Of course we will lose occasionally but I think the weekend defeat was only our third loss in 20 competitive games," added Slade. "That gives you some idea of our footballing fortune at the minute."

Slade's team will get the opportunity to test themselves against Premiership opposition once again when they play Newcastle in the next round of the Carling Cup.

"For the Newcastle game people were queuing up for tickets at 4.30am and fans were turned down even if they had the required two vouchers. There were something like 15,000 vouchers in circulation but unfortunately we only had so many tickets - that gives you some idea of the fever in the town. The gate for the league game against Wycombe was 7,200, which if you look back would have been a good gate for us when Grimsby were in the Championship."

To be on an upward curve is good

Russell Slade

Grimsby have been paying off a tax bill described by Slade as "horrendous" since their relegation from the Championship. Meeting Premiership opposition twice in a matter of months has helped alleviate those problems.

Slade reckons he will see little of the cup cash to spend on players but is happy to see the club returning to an even keel. And he is confident that the club's recent form shows that there is enough quality at Blundell Park for Grimsby to start climbing through the divisions.

"We have made a good start and I like to think we can keep the momentum going. I look at Scarborough, my last club, and it saddens me to see them second bottom of the Conference. It takes a lot of hard work and heartbreak to build a club, but doesn't take much to see it turn on a downward spiral.

"Grimsby has had plenty of that in recent times so to be in the upward curve is good."

Any idea if we can get this match on pplive... ?

Judging by some of the talk going around some of the forums it's a bad idea to mention it on the forum. Sorry if I'm wrong about that.

I can't find it anywhere btw ;)

Blatant elbow on Shearer

49877[/snapback]

Over on SMB there is at least 3-4 threads devoted solely to Shearer getting elbowed and how much they love that happening, is there really any group of people out there more depressingly sad than that shower ;)
