From true-faith

Derbies are always horrible, spiteful, violent occasions and its worse when the match kicks off. There is only one thing that matters on derby day and that is the result. We got that in a highly charged, highly pressurised atmosphere with Souness well aware anything short of outright victory would leave him wide open. But whilst it is always highly, highly satisfying to beat the Mackem Manky Mob it is also a sad indictment of the falling standards and aspirations of our club that we celebrated the win with such gusto. Basically, that's all we have this season.

Not that the derby win should not be put to good use. It should raise morale and it should put down a marker for future performances. Shola Ameobi can save Newcastle United an awful lot of money if he can turn in the kind of performance he did against the Village Of The Damned First Eleven on a regular basis. Full of running, commitment and his technique was admirable. Tracking down defenders, back supporting defenders. Absolutely outstanding. Keep this up and we'll start calling him the Fenham Eusobio again.

But let's put this game to bed. Satisfying as it was it is only 3 pts. We need to kick on and as is so often the case, it is the Lion who calls it as it is, demanding consistency and more from his team-mates. He knows the support is fed up with excuses about injuries and training pitches and perhaps the management need to concentrate more on the players they have available than spend time publicly whinging about the players they don't.

We have Grimsby in the League Cup this week. This is like a trip back in time. There was the time when we travelled regularly to places like Grimsby and there is always the temptation to take this kind of opposition lightly. You know, like Spurs did and came unstuck. No-one is talking about winning anything anymore. I think we know we have a manager who is incapable of pulling that off and derby wins or not, is on borrowed time. He'll not be here next season in my opinion. Still, it would be nice to dream and the dreaming has to start at Blundell Park. After a great show of courage and commitment on Sunday, this cannot be after the Lord Mayor's Show. Time to be professional.

Likewise at West Brom at the weekend. This is an away game we need to win and should win if we are going to get anywhere near the top 6. If we don't win these two games, then a highly enjoyable win over the SMB will not be worth very much beyond our customary piss-taking. We should be about more than that.

Kick on!
