Huddlestone...

NEWCASTLE are eyeing a summer swoop for Tom Huddlestone – after missing out on the Spurs star in January.

The Chronicle can reveal that United tried to sign the England Under-21 international on loan during the New Year transfer window.

Assistant manager Chris Hughton was among those who recommended that Magpies manager Joe Kinnear ease his midfield problems by taking Huddlestone on board until the end of the season.

And although Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp rejected Newcastle’s approach, United will consider making a close-season bid for the 22-year-old – if they stay up.

The Magpies signed Kevin Nolan to fill the gap in their midfield following that Spurs snub.

But doubts over Joey Barton’s future at St James’s Park – and Huddlestone’s desire for a regular starting place – mean the former Derby starlet remains on Newcastle’s radar.

Huddlestone’s ability to play in central defence is another major attraction for would-be buyers, who have been alerted to his dissatisfaction with spending spells on the bench under Redknapp.

Hughton worked with Huddlestone at Tottenham during Martin Jol’s managerial reign at White Hart Lane, and remains a firm admirer.

However, Newcastle are likely to be only one of numerous clubs keen on Huddlestone if he decides his future lies elsewhere.

Jol – now in charge at German title challengers SV Hamburg – would be keen to re-sign a man he bought as an 18-year-old for £2.5m, while Fulham and Everton are also interested.

-----------

Would be a great signing imo, massive range of passing and a great strike on him.

I'd think he'd cost us about 5-7mil like.

your being sarcastic aren't you?

I actually rate him, he's got a good engine and has a pretty good passing ability, and his technique when strikin the ball is a rare comodity in the PL.

Yeah he hasnt been as good this season, in and out the side, and i think he thrived under Jol.

Just think the lad needs a new challenge tbh.

I could be wrong like.

I think he's a canny player.

Agreed.

He's not the most mobile mind, a bit like Guthrie in that respect, although obviously a lot more powerful.

so hes a canny player who doesn't really score or setup goals...

how does that work

(maybe i'm miles off with the guesstimate of his stats though)

Danny B of use for a change :baby:

(i'm quite proud of that pun)

Woaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Gutierrez.

Huddlestone has fallen out of favour but will get his fair share of assists and goals. His vision and range of passing is brilliant and can let fly from the edge of the box

Problems: Only functions in a 4-5-1 so someone can do his running for him, has the turning circle of the QE2 meaning he is very easily bypassed in midfield, and he is positionally suspect.

He is a favourite down the lane because of the odd hollywood ball that gets the seals clapping and he's English.

Not good enough for me:

Rather have him than Smith or Butt. Doubt there's anything in this though, although I doubt just about every transfer rumor that involves us these days.

That's like saying you'd rather have 2 weeks in Paradise rather than fully blown bad aids.

whl season ticket holder at my work basically says while hes an excellent player, he just too bulky. not overweight as such but very stocky.

Totally agree with that. Even when he lost all the weight under Ramos he wasnt agile enough.

Cut out for rugby really.

Do you reckon he could play centre-half Danny, with that in mind?

I recall reading an assessment of Huddlestone, but I can't for the life of me remember if it was by a team mate or a football pundit. Anyhoo, the assessment nearly made me fall of my seat when he was reported to be as good as (no word of a lie here) Franz fucking Beckenbauer (sp)!!!!

The lad does look okay, the times I've seen him, but he just looks the wrong shape iyam. Sounds daft, but he just looks too bulky to be mobile enough at the very top. Then again, he wouldn't be at the very top if he did come here!

I don't rate him at all, not as a good top flight player anyway. Different if we go down, but its just becoming more depressing how we are behaving more and more like a 2nd rate club again.

He has played there a couple of times for us and for england and admittedly his pace looks less of a factor however, his tackling isnt great and I cant see him throwing himself around to get in the way.

His best position is sitting in a midfield five pulling the strings with no real responsibility and plenty of time on the ball.

aye he is technically very good and has a ferocious shot - would probably do well alongside a runner/tackler in the midfield like nolan - doubt he would come to us like

Seem to remember a couple of years back Spurs fans were saying he was better than Fabregas (and the rest of the world mocking them).

Always looked like being on the brink of being a good player to me but never quite achieving it. Needless to say that puts him quite a way ahead of most of our team these days.
