So did Watchmen get a worldwide release last Friday

After watching it last night I agree with both Sloop on the woefull use of Cohen and CID on the boots.

I also think that the jet flame was actually a perfectly judged comic book (which let's not forget is what this film is based on) moment. Maybe I'm wrong but I took it being there for comedic effect rather having any serious intent behind it.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the film. In a lot of ways it gave me exactly what I've always wanted a comic film to give me, a story that isn't just your average how I got my powers fair and actually has a dark story behind it. I don't know why people are struggling to understand it having not read the book because I had no problems at all. I loved Rorshach (I suspect my spelling is way off there) and The Comedian who are both the kind of deeper comic characters that usually never make it to the screen.

That said I thought the ending was a bit weak and I can't really believe that The Watchmen is the best comic ever because from what I'm seeing in the film isn't a story that's quite strong enough.

The movie isn't the book in it's entirety, and The Watchmen isn't the best comic book ever. It's just one of the few comics to have migrated into the mainstream and maintain any semblance of serious tone.

Just got back from watching it tonight. Probably pay to see it at the IMAX because the view I had wasn't great and the people behind were there to kill time rather than any desire to watch the film by the sounds of things.

I came away a little disappointed, but more because I had such high hopes for it, they were unlikely to have ever been met. All in all I enjoyed the film, at least 4 out of 5 stars imo.

Yeah I knew it wasn't the whole book but still it felt like it couldn't have come from that great a book. I am however fully aware that my argument is here is totally idiotic as I've never read it.

I'm not really up on comics though so I wouldn't know which are the really top ones and I'm going off what I've read about it since that film has been in production.

I think agree with your assement of it as 4 star film though.

Saw it tonight.

I enjoyed it, it was weird and quirky, with likeable yet hateable characters and me and wor fella both agree that if someone asked us what it was about we couldn't really explain it properly.

a rating out of 10 i'd give it a 6.5, worth a watch but wouldn't chose to see it again if something else was on offer over on ITV.

saw the trailers for star trek, lesbian vampires and xmen origin

lesbian vampires - James Corden - looks funny as fk,and wouldn't mind seeing that trek one with simon thingy in as scotty - looks good.

Xmen - not a big fan of prequels.

Your not the only person who's said that I'm certainly not having a go, but I really can't understand what's so difficult to understand.

Former superhero is murdered, former colleagues investigate against a backdrop of the world on the verge on nuclear war (I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I won't say any more). Actually it puts me sort of in mind of LA Confidential for some reason.

I don't think it's that complicated.

No No, don't get me wrong, I understand the film, but it has so many levels I just don't think I could explain it properly or do it justice if someone said to me so whats it like should I go and see it? It's just one of those kind of films that you do have to actually watch to understand fully.

Sorry fair enough. It's just I keep reading about how it's difficult to understand if you haven't read the book but I just don't see that. There is quite a bit going on I'll certainly admit that and I dare say it will benefit from multiple viewings.

I've never read the book and understood it, didn't even know there was one.

good guys/bad guys with superpowers and human personality flaws made into super flaws (like their powers) meaning thier flaws have a bigger impact on peoples lives.

with the overall message that often you have to sacrifice a little to gain alot.

not really a new message just a new way of getting it over to the public - americans will love its underlying tones.

oh and love conquers all - be it love for your parents or the fella you're shagging in his space ship.

blah blah blah - shoulda had some car chases if you ask me B)

I think a big reason comic book people regard it as "the best comic EVAR!!!" has a lot to do with when it was released.

Having been a kid of the 80's, Watchmen was the first comic to ever really explore the characters and their motivations for being superheroes or costumed adventurers or whatever. Up to that point, it was all, "Huh. I can fly/ shoot lasers from my eyes/ have claws/ etc. I better go stop that bank robbery!" Or conversely, if they were a villan, sub in, "I should go start a bank robbery."

Now that we've had 20 years of comics that aren't cookie-cutter hero vs. villans and less black and white, good vs. evil movies like Pulp Fiction, it doesn't seem as groundbreaking or original, but at the time, my God!

It's sorta like when I hear kids today say they don't get why Nirvana was so big in the early 90's. It wasn't so much their music or whatever, it was because before them, all you ever heard on the radio and saw on MTV was Paula Abdul or Motley Crue. Or, going further back, the Ramones- why does everyone say they're so important? Because they played punk music when disco ruled and somehow survived!

I still think it's a great book, don't get me wrong- I'm not trying to take anything away from the actual story, but if Moore wrote it last year instead of 1986, I doubt it would've gotten the respect that Watchmen enjoys today.

  • 4 weeks later...
wait till you get to possibly the worst sex scene of all time (complete with jet flame orgasm symbolism) with Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah in the background

Take the stick out of your arse man, that scene was supposed to be funny, and was.
