Is that not just because its the 20th anniversary though? They reckon 28000 people went this year compared to about 8000 that attend most years. Craig 6700
Maybe, just maybe there's a glimmer of hope..... Minister backs Hillsborough call Culture Secretary Andy Burnham has called for a "full disclosure" of all evidence on the Hillsborough Disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans died. The victims were crushed to death during Liverpool's FA Cup tie with Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989. Mr Burnham made his comments after being heckled by angry fans at an emotional memorial service at Anfield on the 20th anniversary of the tragedy. The families are still fighting for a full inquiry into the disaster. On the day of the tragedy, Liverpool supporters were in the Leppings Lane of the Sheffield stadium. South Yorkshire Police, which oversaw the event, opened a large exit gate which forced too many Liverpool fans on to the terrace, leaving the fans inside trapped between people entering the ground and the metal fences at the front of the stand. During the memorial service on Wednesday, fans chanted "Justice for the 96" during Mr Burnham's speech. Mr Burnham, Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport, said: "If there is further information held by public bodies relevant to the tragedy that has not yet been published then it should be. "I believe now the public interest lies very clearly in full disclosure of all such information, so that the families and others can make their judgement on all the facts." The Hillsborough Families Support Group have led a two-decade long campaign to have the events which led to the deaths fully investigated, despite previous inquiries. At the service, attended by 25,000 people, Trevor Hicks, the former chairman of the group, vowed the fight for justice would continue. As he address the mourning fans, he added: "Still together, still determined, still resolved as ever that the truth will defeat the lies and propaganda." The government minster, a life-long Everton fan, recalled hearing of the rival team's tragedy at Hillsborough while attending Everton's FA Cup tie on the same day. Matty 0
A Liverpool player's career at Anfield looks over after claims he behaved offensively during the Hillsborough memorial service on Wednesday. Charles Itandje, the club's reserve goalkeeper, was reportedly caught by television cameras laughing and fooling around during the service to mark the 20th anniversary of the deaths of 96 Liverpool supporters at Hillsborough, according to the Liverpool Echo. Outraged supporters have complained about Itandje’s behaviour on internet message boards and the club are understood to be livid with the 26-year-old after studying footage of the incident, with a view to taking disciplinary action. Rafael Benitez is said to be disgusted by the goalkeeper's behaviour, which has been described as "wholly unacceptable" and club officials are reported to be exploring the maximum punishment they can impose on the player. He is unlikely to play for the club again. Supporters claim Itandje was seen laughing and joking and simulating dance moves during the “Tragedy” song sung at the service. The rest of the Liverpool squad conducted themselves impeccably, as did members of the youth and reserve teams who were also present. Itandje joined Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2007. The former Lens player has only featured in seven first-team games since then, with his last appearance coming in last season’s shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Barnsley. More news to follow. Craig 6700
Hillsborough files may be opened Secret files on the Hillsborough disaster could be made public 10 years early after a request from the home secretary. Jacqui Smith has asked South Yorkshire Police to release the documents, which contain detailed evidence of what happened during the tragedy in 1989. It could help families of the 96 victims who want a new inquiry. Ms Smith has met South Yorkshire Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes to discuss the records. Joan Traynor, 76, who lost her two sons, Christopher, 26, and Kevin, 16, in the disaster, welcomed the move. She said: "At last something might be done and at last there might be a chance that the truth could be out. "After years of campaigning I feel like something might happen. We have felt nothing but injustice and the only way we can get justice for our loved ones is if these files are made public and a fresh inquiry is opened." The files contain evidence from the police, local council and the ambulance service. Documents like this are usually not made public for 30 years, but the home secretary has intervened two decades after the disaster. Evidence was examined during the original inquest, in which the coroner ruled all victims had sustained their fatal injuries by 3.15pm, based on advice from pathologists. As a result, he did not hear any evidence of what happened after that point - but many bereaved families believe their loved ones could have still been alive and they want a fresh inquiry. Culture secretary Andy Burnham was heckled as campaigners shouted "Justice for the 96" at the Hillsborough memorial service on Wednesday. Following the service, he called for "full disclosure" of all evidence on the Hillsborough disaster.
