Jimbo 175
France Football have named the 50 nominees for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award with seven Englishmen on the list. Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Frank Lampard, John Terry, David Beckham, Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard are in the running for the gong, which was scooped by Milan striker Andrei Shevchenko last year. The mantle of European Footballer of the Year accompanies the prize and there are a number of Premiership contenders, including the likes of Michael Essien, Petr Cech, Park Ji-sung and Luis Garcia. Chelsea are predictably well represented after their exploits last term and in starting the 2005/2006 campaign in spectacular fashion. Real Madrid's Galacticos are also out in force with their big names all featuring, including recent acquisition Robinho. Arsenal have only one representative - star striker Thierry Henry, although former skipper Patrick Vieira is also on the list. Barcelona star Ronaldinho will be favourite to come out on top with the winner announced later in the year. Full list of nominees: Adriano (Internazionale) Michael Ballack (Bayern Munich) David Beckham (Real Madrid) Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus) Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus) Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus) Jamie Carragher (Liverpool) Petr Cech (Chelsea) Gregory Coupet (Lyon) Cris (Lyon) Deco (Barcelona) Dida (Milan) Didier Drogba (Chelsea) Emerson (Juventus) Michael Essien (Chelsea) Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona) Luis Figo (Internazionale) Diego Forlan (Villarreal) Luis Garcia (Liverpool) Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) Thierry Henry (Arsenal) Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Juventus) Juninho (Lyon) Kaka (Milan) Frank Lampard (Chelsea) Roy Makaay (Bayern Munich) Claude Makelele (Chelsea) Paolo Maldini (Milan) Pavel Nedved (Juventus) Michael Owen (Newcastle) Park Ji-sung (Manchester United) Andrea Pirlo (Milan) Raul (Real Madrid) Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal) Arjen Robben (Chelsea) Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid) Robinho (Real Madrid) Ronaldinho (Barcelona) Ronaldo (Real Madrid) Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) Andrei Shevchenko (Milan) John Terry (Chelsea) Lilian Thuram (Juventus) David Trezeguet (Juventus) Marc van Bommel (Barcelona) Ruud van Nistelrooy (Manchester United) Patrick Vieira (Juventus) Xavi (Barcelona) Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid). Good to see Michael Owen in there, but what the fuck is Cris doing in there ? possibly the worst football I've ever seen in my life.
bez 0
Cris WAS a footballer who played badly. Doesnt mean he is always going to be poor I suppose. Frank Lampard struggled to justify his reputation just after his pie eating West Ham days. He improved too. Does surprise me he has got to that level though. If Shola works hard is he going to be there next year? Edited October 24, 2005 by bez

Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
I think some on that list are there on reputation rather than exploits.
Shearergol 0
If you're going on "year" as in 2005, Lampard should walk that award.

Optimistic Nut 188
Cris has been outstanding this year for Lyon. Along with Juninho, he's been one of the main reasons they've walked/are walking away with the French title & doing well in Europe.

Guest CrimsonFault
Was it Souness who signed him at Blackburn btw? 49232[/snapback] Yes. If I remember correctly, he wasn't bad when he first signed, scored a couple of important goals but since then he's gone downhill.
