I don't believe in Unicorns but have not read sufficient literature to call myself an expert.

Given that faith is said to be the belief in things unseen and that most of religion has to be taken on faith (sorry for that one) it's irrelevant how much you read or study or examine religion. People who do believe will believe and people who don't believe will never believe ( The latter just have handy evidence and what not )

in all seriousness the science V religion debate, although entertaining, is pointless. No side will persuade the other.

so you have a resolute opinion on God's existence without any understanding of the intellectual material that guides faith?

Yes, I can. By using rational reasoning and making up my own mind. I'm quite agnostic about the subject though but I find the organised religions (I've read some of the source texts a bit - the Bible, some of the Koran - surely the best place to make your mind up rather than having someone else tell you what to think) frankly completely unbelievable.

Actually, I have read a couple of theological texts come to think of it. One about the lead up to crucifixion by Gaza Vermes (sp?) that was canny and a book by C S Lewis when I was still at school which was bloody awful.

I have no religion. Never baptised or christened.

I'm guess I'm agnostic/aethiest.

I don't understand why there has to be all these rules to follow religions e.g. hats; clothes; don't work certain days; can/can't be absolved of sins; must eat this meat, mustn't eat that meat, and countless others.

I've just started reading a book on Buddhism to see what that's all about. Maybe I will become all enlightened?

In my heart I feel I'm a fairly good chap who does 'the right thing'. I let others live their religious lives the way they want, without feeling any need to condemn them or slate them. I only wish religious zealots would appreciate that their religion is the best, therefore they don't need to condemn other religions, as they should be safe in the knowledge that 'I'm all right Jack'.

I'm a Jedi Knight

Ironic that there's more "proof" about that then any actual religion, and it has the 2nd or 3rd highest number of people claiming to be members in the UK, but they won't recognise it as such.

Mass delusion needs a few centuries to become accepted I guess.

How is there more proof of Jediism out of interest? Isn't there quite a lot of evidence it was invented by George Lucas as a work of fiction?

Not that I'm defending other religions, they all rely on faith rather than evidence after all.

A lot of us are catholic or at least born catholic, I'm surprised, I thought we were outnumbered by prods 5:1 in England.

I believe in God, I think there are things about catholicism that are open to question, I was christened catholic, and made my first holy communion, but you have to question some things that are in the Bible, and things we should believe because some celebate fella in Rome tells you to. The abortion thing, I don't know where I stand on it to be honest, but I don't think it should be as black and white as the church tell you it should be.

I think as long as you question things then it's fine - I think catholicism can provide a good moral grounding but when I think of the stuff I now reject I think the morality I now have is just through good parenting. I guess if you're not lucky in that respect then a religious framework could provide what's missing.

My dad was nominally protestant but I'm not sure he believed in God - but he did think morality can only come from religion (which I don't accept) which was why he was happy for my Mam to raise me as a catholic. I think he was a good enough man in his own right to raise me regardless of which church I went to.

You mention a mix in England - I do know that my parents had quite a bit of hassle from both sides (CofE + catholic) when they married in 1946 - another area where I think things have improved for the better in modern times.

On abortion I support choice but at the same time I think its a nasty business we could and should do without - by getting rid of the need for it I mean.

I despise the reality that the vast majority of people are indoctrinated through birth into their parents' versions of bollocks.

Boils my piss to see those huge families of orthodox Jews with all those little kids alienated into their own obscure culture with little chance to make up their own minds about life.

Religion should not be allowed till your 21, no 30, fuck it. 45.

It is all human adolescence imo. Spirituality good, religion bad.

It';s a tough call as at my most fundamental I'd love to see indoctrination of kids banned but unfortunately if its an important issue for parents then its unworkable - we either need to rely on gradual reduction in "fervour" or have a cut-off point like removing all kids from their parents for one generation .

One of the worrying developments in the UK is of course faith schools - even if people are faking it to gain entry, its still a link to the churches - it goes without saying I'd abolish them.

I think that's probably based on census data, people who were brought up CoE on this board may be more likely to be atheist now (maybe less powerful indoctrination)?

Having said that I can think of a few people bought up catholics on here - you, me, NJS, Catmag, SLP off the top of my head.

This is one of the special "get outs" religion has that annoys me - we have a voting age and an age for consent/marriage based on kids "not being ready" but 6 year olds can still be called catholics or whatever.
