Scottish Mag 3
NEWCASTLE have lined up Mexican coach Javier Aguirre as a successor to Joe Kinnear if the current United manager quits this summer. The Magpies believe Aguirre, who was controversially sacked by Atletico Madrid last week, could fill the breach should Kinnear decide against accepting the offer of a two-year contract at St James’s Park. Kinnear has been taking time to weigh up his personal circumstances, and missed yesterday’s win at West Brom due to ill health — although he intends to return to his post in the near future. But United have drawn up contingency plans which could see Aguirre inherit the hotseat. The 50-year-old spent two-and-a-half seasons in charge at Atletico, having landed the job by steering modest Osasuna into Europe via a fourth-place finish in La Liga. Aguirre looked well set for a long stay in Madrid when Atletico finished fourth in Spain last season, qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in 11 years. But despite an impressive start to the current campaign, and Atletico qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League, Aguirre was fired after a six-game winless start to 2009. That sparked anger among some Atletico players, with the likes of striker Diego Forlan reportedly intent on following Aguirre out of the club in the summer. Newcastle considered the credentials of several Spanish-based coaches before and after appointing Kevin Keegan as manager 13 months ago.

Park Life 71
Any Spurs connections? I think this file has got Jmenez/Vetere written on it. I would be astounded if we ended up with him as it would be a very interesting appointment and also show someone has done some homework.

dave_prso9 0
Since I registered here there have been about a hundred Newcastle/Atletico/Rangers stories (my other teams) My verdict on Aguirre; He is a decent coach, no doubt about that. Has a tendency to be a bit cautious and under him Atleti were pretty poor this season, although he did well in Europe. Atletico played well within themselves and lacked confidence in matches, especially against bigger opposition. Some of his team selections were a bit strange/brave, such as leaving out Forlan and drafting in 19 year old defenders for big games. He doesn't speak English AFAIK, and think he'd struggle to adapt. Not even sure Kinnear can speak it that well anyway, and Ashley certainly appears to have lost his voice now the transfer window is over. This geezer will fit in fine. Zathras 296
Aguirre What a complete lunatic. Not quite as bad as LaVolpe, but I love Mexican coaches--can't beat them for arrogance.
AmericanMag 0
Ramos v2.0 Indicative that we aren't planning on getting rid of the DOF if that is what he is used to in Spain...
