Asprilla 96
Why did we let City have Given BEFORE we got our hands on Johnson? http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_4888067,00.html Manchester City have rejected an £8million offer from Newcastle for midfielder Michael Johnson. The Magpies have been monitoring the 20-year-old's situation for some time and lodged a bid for his services earlier on deadline day. They had been hopeful of concluding a deal and it was understood that Johnson was open to the idea of moving to St James' Park. However, City have turned down the approach as they view Johnson as an important part of their long-term plans. Johnson established himself as a regular in the City side in the first half of the 2007/08 campaign before suffering an abdominal injury. He has had fewer opportunities to impress this term with Mark Hughes making a number of new signings, but in September he penned a five-year contract with City

Holden McGroin 6451
I think it was a token gesture of a bid. Surely they would have talked about Johnson when negotiating the Given deal. And then to announce 30 mins before the deadline that a bid was rejected is a joke. There is just no logic in it.
Dr Gloom 21757
it smells like bullshit just like with the milner money, the cash from given and n'zogbia has not been re-invested. ashley obviously doesn't give a monkeys about protecting his asset. oh well championship here we come

Scottish Mag 3
The other thing was whilst the players might not have been what people on here wanted the dozy old fucker JFK yesterday said he wanted an experienced Centre Half and a Striker. Why did we not get Jo and Ben Haim on loan as part of the Given deal? Surely it would add numbers in the positions he is saying he wanted to bulk up on? Fucking clueless man.. That would have made perfect sense like. Seems unbelievable but the current lot are seemingly more inept at this than we under Roeder when there was something like one full-time scout and no backroom staff to speak of. They're not clueless, they just had no intention whatsoever of bringing in the players that were needed during this window. They wanted the cash from City and that's all. TheMoog 0
It just shows Ashley's obvious real motives imo, if this doesn't show him to be actively trying his hardest to ruin the club I don't know what does - half-arsed attempts to run things and selling off our better assets for peanuts. Why is Dennis Wise the most highly paid non-playing employee at the club if recruitment is such a low priority? Because it fits the 'system' that Ashley thought would be a great idea. .com make the following point: The only piece of business concluded was the arrival of Ryan Taylor and around £4m in exchange for N'Zogbia, leaving Mike Ashley with a profit from the dealings and yet more questions about just what it is that Dennis Wise is meant to be doing for this club. Of the three deals, Kinnear claimed credit for Peter Lovenkrands due the old boy network, while Ryan Taylor was a by-product of resolving the Charlie conundrum. That leaves Nolan, who looks like a knee-jerk response to Barton's broken foot. If he really was our number one target as claimed, why wasn't he here on January 1st - when Barton was still recovering from his previous injury? Newcastle has therefore set up an extensive scouting system. We look for young players, for players in foreign leagues who everyone does not know about. We try and stay ahead of the competition. We search high and low looking for value, for potential that we can bring on and for players who will allow Newcastle to compete at the very highest level but who don't cost the earth. Are you saying they are mutually exclusive? Well if in his own mind he is pursueing his own strategy he isn't really being incompetant, I get what you mean though. It clearly is foohardy I agree. But hey're not doing it cause they are idiots or something, it is calculated. My feeling is he still wants to sell at the earliest oppurtunity. trophyshy 7066
Obviously he's not an idiot, but he's clearly failing to run the club to the minimum standards that we find acceptable, the fans who make the club and pass millions of pounds to him each season. I think people should be allowed to bitch and moan about him as its obvious there is pretty much fuck all else we can do, unless we walk away, and if that happens then we may well 'do a Leeds'. Totally agree people should show their frustration and the club is being run bady from a first team pov. But he will have been calculating exactly how much to spend or profit with an eye on the bottom line. It is a classic baseline investment approach where growth/profit is extrapulated from within the business and not from returns on outlay.

When do we reckon he'll have covered his initial investment and will be able to start investing the clubs earnings in the team rather than on covering his arse? Before we're down in league 1?
