Barney 0
Newcastle United have firmed up their interest in Michael Johnson by lodging a bid for the Manchester City midfielder, skysports.com understands. Joe Kinnear and Newcastle's hierarchy are huge fans of the England Under-21 international, who appears ready to leave Eastlands. Skysports.com understands that Johnson is very much open to the idea heading to the North East and Newcastle are hopeful they can conclude a deal before the 5pm deadline. City value Johnson highly, but Newcastle are believed to be offering around £8million and they are confident that will be enough for City to sell. Johnson only agreed a new five-year deal in September, but Mark Hughes seemingly has other ideas for his first team and Newcastle are ready to pounce. The likes of Aston Villa, Liverpool and Everton have all shown an interest in the past, but Newcastle look set to pull off a big coup if they can finalise the move in the next few hours. Ayatollah Hermione 13822
I'd be happy with this if it went through like. Any reason why there wasn't a player involved in the Given deal or was that all just rumours and guesswork anyway?

Sir Bob Almighty! 0
If they are going to pay 8 mil for Johnson why not add a few more mil to that and slap a bid in for Veloso?
Smooth Operator 10
I fucking hope so, looks a good player from what i've seen. Good engine, him and Nolan would work well in the middle.

I'd like Veloso here, but there's a chance that he might be a bit lightweight for the PL. Johnson has 2 seasons or so PL experience.
stevietoon 0
you would imagine any deal to bring johnson would have been included in thie prolonged discussion with city regarding Given. unless of course this is Ashley suddenly "wiseing" up to the fact that we are desperately short of personnel. Gejon 2
We could have prioritised the Given funds for someone else but have since had good news on N'Zogbias move.
Barney 0
What I mean is how they deal with a quicker pace. Viana wasn't a midget, but the pace of English footy seemed a bit much for him, getting harried by Delaps and Nolan's and the sort you don't get in Portugal, where you have more time on the ball. Park Life 71
There is no comparison between Veloso and Johonson. One is borderline world class and the other is a reasonable PL player. Edited February 2, 2009 by Park Life
Stephen 0
£8m is a huge risk considering his injury problems recently and alleged problems off the field.

Kid Dynamite 6993
Dont know like, he was the jewel in their crown last year. If he comes good with Guthrie they could see us alright for a good few years.
