Capello doesn't rate Richards at all. He's looked decent this season, thick as mince mind.

I would say he's about as antithetical to a trad Italian defender as you can get. Doesn't have to think about the game at all because physically he's got a bit more going for him. That sort of schtick doesn't cut the mustard at top level though, so I'm with Capello on this one.

Twice he's said fuckin in interviews. He knows what he's doing he's trying to get a laugh out of his mates. Total mong. He'd have been in them riots if he wasn't a footballer. No racial intent in that comment, but he would, thick as fuck.

Aye, I can remember Garth Crookes pulling him up about it when he did it.

In your heart you know there's a high likelyhood that he would though Sammy. He's that sort of modern wrongun character. What sort of doilum takes a video of himself shaggin a bird on his phone say "any good pet?". He is everything that's wrong with modern Britain, and football bling culture. He'd make DEADMAN look like Charles Darwin if he was on here I guarantee.

That's a fair question, I don't think we've got great choice there at all* on whats currently available. If Johnson was fit though I don't think it's a discussion worth having really. I've no qualms about Richards filling in there I suppose, I just really don't want him there for any tournament football.

*Mind you I never thought Gary Neville was owt special either and he played there for a decade.

Do you rate Johnson? Not a fan at all personally.

Agree with everyone saying Richards is thick. I remember after he broke into the City team he was interviewed in the off season and was talking himself up for a move to Chelsea.

Actually overall I just don't think it's a spot we've got much talent in. Fortunately as I've said before, I think it's probably the least significant position on the pitch being as you face a left sided attacking player, which is statistically the worst staffed (and therefore weakest) position for most opponents.

I don't think he's great actually, I just don't rate Richards. Richards got loads of plaudits at the very start of his career and that seems to have persisted but I don't think he's come on at all personally (particularly in the intelligence stakes as Stevie highlights) and that's a shame when you've got all the other things going for you. But then that's a different skill altogether and I suspect Richards just doesnt have that. You look on the other flank and you've got Cole, who is a complete twat of a human being and a mong off the pitch, but in terms of football judgment is an absolute joy.

true about cole we've been spoiled at LB with him there preceeded by Pearce (who filled in the gap I really cant remember only a couple of years between them)

between Johnson and Richards though I'd take richards, hes a more capable defender than johnson though hes certainly not great by any means and under capellos remit as you mentioned its a case of a defender who uses his physical ability to make up for not being a great defender and a RB who actually cant defend but is more use further forward, prefer defenders able to defend myself.

Good point about the right back being up against a lesser standard generally. I read a good interview about how the left back position used to be where teams were least interested in. Over time it's become a hugely important position as so much starts with them.

Le Saux/Phil Nev?

Anyway, Johnson offers a shit load going forward, but tends to switch off and get caught out with shit positioning. Ashley Cole used to suffer a bit of that when he was very young.

Le Saux retired stopped playing international in 2000 think youre right with Neville

Johnsons 27 now though he should have got that out of his system already hes played more than 200 senior games and another 34 full england caps hes not still learning at the top level.

Le Saux played a lot for England but the memory gap for Andrew might be down to Venables, then Hoddle playing 3 at the back and using him primarily as left wing-back in a midfield 5. Keegan played Phil Neville there (LB) in Euro 2000 (with disastrous results against Romania). Not sure if Le Saux retired or if he was dropped, thinking back. Neville played there just before Ashley Cole arrived on the scene and I think Wayne Bridge had only just broken into the Southampton side too.

Venables and his Team Positive formation.

Was it Keegler who played Dyer as right wing back?

Might've been. Sounds like something Sven might've done as well like.

The best penalty taker takes the penalties though, that's how it works. And if he's been very mediocre for England then so has Gerrard (to put in mildly). Probably says as much about both their respective egos as their ability that they couldn't make it work when they played together.

Gerrard's been mediocre because he has a lot more defensive responsibilities than he has for Liverpool due to Lampard's involvement. Italy wouldn't tell Pirlo to sit because they prefer someone else in an attacking sense. To be fair it's not the only reason Gerrard's been shit for England he's played wide on occasion too, but it is the key reason.

Pirlo's role has always been to sit though. :D
