COLIN Calderwood has officially joined Newcastle United's coaching staff – as first revealed in the Evening Post last week.

The Scot has linked up with fellow former Nottingham Forest manager Joe Kinnear at St James' Park.

Calderwood may combine the role with a part-time position as head coach of the Faroe Islands.

The Faroe Islands Football Association claim Calderwood has agreed to take on the job ahead of a friendly against Iceland in March.

The former Mansfield, Swindon, Spurs, Aston Villa, Forest and Notts County centre-half will be a specialist defensive coach.

Kinnear said: "We have Colin Calderwood on board now, and he will be joining us until the end of the season to bring something else to our backroom team."

It is understood Calderwood held initial talks over the role early last week but played down reports that he was set to join the Premiership club until the deal was agreed.

:(

Not sure which defence needs the most work on...

NEWCASTLE United coach Colin Calderwood admits that he cannot wait to get his hands dirty and get down to work with the Magpie squad.

The 44-year-old joined the Toon backroom staff on Monday and immediately set about helping boss Joe Kinnear and Chris Hughton in their preparations for Wednesday's trip to Manchester City.

And Calderwood, who left his position as manager of Nottingham Forest in December, told nufcTV that the opportunity to get back out on the training pitch at a club of United's stature was too hard to resist.

"It was the size of the club and the level that they are playing at which attracted me to the role," said the former Scotland international.

"This is a division which I have not been involved in for nearly five seasons now.

"Also the chance to get back out on the training pitch and coaching again is something which is in my blood and I jumped at the opportunity to do so.

"I've just been watching the boys and assessing things so far but I can't wait to get joined in, do a couple of sessions and get to know the boys a bit better and shout and holler a little bit.

"I'm here to give Joe and Chris a hand in any way they want to use me so I'm looking forward to it.

"It's a new experience and I really want to get my feet and hands dirty."

Calderwood was a player at Tottenham Hotspur when Hughton was first-team coach at White Hart Lane.

And the no-nonsense centre-back, who then went on to manage Spurs' reserves, says he is delighted to be re-united with the former Republic of Ireland defender.

"I've had a relationship with Chris for a number of years and I was a player at Spurs and then on the coaching staff while he was there," added Calderwood.

"He played a big part in brining me here so I'm delighted to work with him again."

I'd rather had Hoddle than Kinnear.

Venables (who was also linked when KK went) would have been a much better bet too (if not ideal). The noises were that he wanted a deal until the end of the season though, which is what Kinnear has got anyway (and potentially longer). Venables or Hoddle wouldn't have been anywhere near as cheap as Kinnear though. :(
