NUFC lie about Lucas Neill approach according to the Hammers

NEWCASTLE United have turned to experienced Aussie international right-back Lucas Neill in order to bolster their injury-ravaged squad.

The Chronicle understands that Neill has emerged as one of United’s main targets in the January transfer window with the black- and-whites in dire need of a boost with the treatment room fit to burst.

The Magpies have also lodged bids for midfielder Stephane Mbia and St Etienne’s French international striker Bafetimbi Gomis, after Mike Ashley released transfer funds following a plea from Toon boss Joe Kinnear.

United are hoping to come to an agreement with West Ham to buy out the remainder of Neill’s contract – which has six months left to run – and transfer chief Dennis Wise’s close relationship with Gianfranco Zola, from their Chelsea days, could help swing the deal.

Kinnear confirmed last night that funds had been made available by Toon tycoon Ashley and that the two £4m bids for new faces had been lodged.

Kinnear said today: “We’ve bid for two players and we have tried our hardest to get them both here at Newcastle United.

“One of them plays for Cameroon – he’s a decent player and is very powerful in the air.”

The Chronicle reported last night that Kinnear was interested in signing tall Cameroon international midfielder Mbia from Rennes.

However, after assessing their options in the right-back position and, given that the cash-strapped Hammers are desperate to reduce their wage bill, United seem to have cooled their interest in Toulouse right-back Albin Ebondo for now.

Mbia is desperate to make the move to the Premier League and with his fellow countryman Geremi edging ever nearer to the exit door at St James’s, the removal of the ex-Real Madrid player from the Toon wage bill will help the move run a little smoother.

Talks between Geremi and Turkish outfit Besiktas continued today.

Gomis was a target of United last term when Kevin Keegan was in charge, and he is now back on the radar.

The striker scored 16 times in 35 French League games last season, but has only struck four in 20 this term.

He scored twice on his international debut for France against Ecuador but, despite winning a place in the Euro 2008 squad for Les Bleus, played only a bit-part role in the tournament as the French flopped in Switzerland.

The 23-year-old would give United some much-needed options in attack at the moment, with Michael Owen Kinnear’s only fully-fit striker.

Yet the acquisition of Neill would give the Magpies a major boost, with influential Senegal international Habib Beye ruled out for 10 weeks.

Not only is the tough-tackling defender able to cover in the centre-back position, but his vast experience in the Premier League could help stabilise Kinnear’s side ahead of the upcoming tough run of fixtures that include trips to Blackburn, Man City and West Brom, plus the must win Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland.

The 30-year-old had an own-goal chalked off in Saturday’s Premier League game between Newcastle and the Hammers, but is said to be keen to make the move.

And in Aussie international team-mate Mark Viduka, he already has a major ally waiting for him on Tyneside.

Meanwhile, United are hoping to complete the signing of 18-year-old striker Caio Ferreira from Brazilian side Clube Atletico do Porto, with red tape currently holding up the deal.

Either he's taking a massive pay-cut or we're breaking the bank to pay his wages. Isn't he on about 80K a week at West Ham?

Aye, but if he's going to be out of contract in 6 months he might as well move on, I'm sure there'd be some incentives anyway.

Be interesting to see how many of these rumoured transfer targets we actually get, I'm not holding my breath.

Fuck off!

If I wanted to support a bunch of fucking aussies I'd support Australia

TBH maybe when he was at his peak at Blackburn but I'd be happier if we were in for Emerton who can play RB, RM & CM and isn't a cunt.

As for Gomis, yeah right.

A left back, Joe... that's LEFT back!!!

Lucas Neill has a track record of being sent off and leeching extraordinarly high wages. Hate to see it but he'll fit right in here

Another disadvantage is that Halliwell will cream himself if this comes off...

Ah but Neill can fit right in anywhere across the pocket Craig.

He fit his cash in his left pocket.

He can stuff a quid or 50 in his right pocket.

He's even been known to try the centre pocket.

(Being factual, besides being a cunt Neill has played quite a bit as LB for both club and country.)

I suspect Neil might just be a six month deal until his contract would have run out anyway. In that case we might be willing to match his stupid wages for that long and he would fill in nicely while Beye is out and would give us an oppertunity to negotiate something else with him beyond that if we like the look of him while he's here.

If this is the case it would be a decent bit of business (which considering it's us probaly means we will sign him on a four year deal, pay stupid wages and flog Beye).

Gomis looked prettty wank in a generally wank looking French national team. But there were plenty of players we know are good looked just as bad so I wouldn't write him off just from that. His 4 goals in 20 games this season is raises more of a question. Rather spend more on the midfield and try and get something from Xisco.

After giving that useless twat ameobi a three year deal, I have no confidence whatsoever that kinnear is capable of identifying and signing any good players. More than likely that they'll be here for the money and see out their contracts but turn out to be a complete waste of time.

Kinnear can't win on that score. He's asking for money to bring people in and getting nowhere.

By the end of the season it's likely we'll be without Owen, Viduka and Xisco. Given the noises from his agent it's not unlikely we won't have Martins either.

If he'd let Ameobi's contract run out too and he'd walked on a free, Kinnear would be a twat for leaving us with Carroll as the only forward at the club.

Ameobi's shit, but at least he's something.

See I just don't understand the way you think.

You agree ameobi is shit and yet you think it's the right thing to do to sign him to a long contract probably on improved money as well. Because he's something? FFS if that's the way you think you can't complain about anything that goes on at this circus because you are willing to settle for third rate players because they are " something".

Amazing, absolutely amazing.

It was proven in the summer that no club in the PL or Chamionship is willing to spend any money on him, should have let him walk, he's a fucking joke.

You're blaming Kinnear and his judgement of players. I'm saying I blame Ashley.

Seems to me Kinnear is making the best he can of a lamentable situation.

If at the end of the window we have signed the following id be confident of us stayin in the PL.

Lovenkrands - FREE and provides cover on the flanks and up front

Neill - SMALL FEE and would give us cover for the whole back line, most importantly whilst Beye is injured

Mbia - 4-5mil, Tough tackling midfielder, cant strike the ball and good with his head, ong term replacement for ARSE? i mea Butt?

Yes i think we'd still need an attacking CM but with Barton coming back, id like to see how he plays for the remainder of the season.

Gomis? Well he'd be ok for 4 mil providing we shifted Xisco, was touted as the next Didier Drogba, was poor last yar but wouldnt be a ba signing a someone has already said we could ose Viduka and Owen at the end of the season. And i dont think martins will go anywhere unless someone triggers his minimal fee release clause.

Even in this dark time im still hopefull, some woould call it dillusional but...

If we get the above in, and maybe these two loans (Italian and Argie) and push on to finish in the top half, keep a relavtively decent diciplinary record we could get into europe, know our sqaud atm wouldnt not be good enough to play in europeb we would be in a better situation to lure better players, keep our best players (Martins, Owen, Given N'Zogbia) n move forward. Maybe im dillusional, maybe, but its not impossible.

Finish 8th and top of fair play league getting into europe...giving Martins, Owen, Given N'Zogbia a reason to stay, and giving MA a reason to invest properly at the end of the season.

We have no chance of getting Gomis or Mbia for 4 million...
