I think we're down one player, and that's Emre, but overall I think the current squad should be able to beat the old one...and it's a lot cheaper.

Since neither of them have hardly played a game since their respective moves, I'd say they cancel each other out.

I don't thinke these like for like comparison show the real picture. Our first team might look arguably better on paper. The thing is that our whole squad looks even more unbalanced since two years ago. There is also the fact that the club looks much more in a turmoil these day making the atmosphere much more hostile. And worst of it all it's been unnecessarily down to self made problems caused by incompetent twats.

The thing is that our whole squad looks even more unbalanced since two years ago. There is also the fact that the club looks much more in a turmoil these day making the atmosphere much more hostile. And worst of it all it's been unnecessarily down to self made problems caused by incompetent twats.

 

I've ordered the list by level of improvement and i think it highlights what you're saying. It's clearly in defense where we've made the biggest strides, the whole back four is replaced with better when everyone's fit.

 

Creatively though we've lost Solano, Dyer and Milner who were all capable of doing something (you could add Emre to that too) and only really brought in Jonas who's inconsistent at best.

The Liverpool result knocked us back.

 

We've kept more clean sheets so far (24%) than the last 2 years (21% and 18%). The improvement is mainly on the road with 30% of away games giving us a clean sheet compared to just 11% for the last 2 years running.

I think that we are really in need of somebody who can deliver a free-kick. IIRC we haven't scored direct from a free kick all season - I doubt there is another team in the league in that situation.

 

In previous seasons Robert, Solano, Shearer and Emre chipped in with goals and/or very good deliveries.

Aye we're missing in quite a lot of vital areas. A few years ago we have 3-4 decent options for most deadball situation.

 

And it is not just there where the comparison fails. It's like saying that because player X faster then player Y, then player X is the better player even though he can't cross, pass or even control the ball 1/2 as well as player Y.
