Happy Face 29
Is the squad better or worse from the summer when Ashley took over? When you actually compare like for like... Danny Guthrie < Scott Parker Jonas Gutierrez < Nolberto Solano Joey Barton = James Milner Alan Smith = Kieron Dyer Xisco = Alberto Luque Nacho Gonzalez = Matty Pattison Mark Viduka = Antoine Sibierski Claudio Cacapa = David Rozehnal Jose Enrique > Celestine Babayaro Fabrizio Coloccini > Abdoulaye Faye Habib Beye >> Stephen Carr Sebastien Bassong >> Peter Ramage I think we're down one player, and that's Emre, but overall I think the current squad should be able to beat the old one...and it's a lot cheaper. Am I being too kind to Wise and co? Edited January 12, 2009 by Happy Face

ChezGiven 0
A better 'base' to the squad and if one or two additions were made, this current squad would piss all over the previous one. Good question though.
Happy Face 29
Smith=Dyer? You taking his injury record into account? Aye. Since neither of them have hardly played a game since their respective moves, I'd say they cancel each other out. Isegrim 10017
I don't thinke these like for like comparison show the real picture. Our first team might look arguably better on paper. The thing is that our whole squad looks even more unbalanced since two years ago. There is also the fact that the club looks much more in a turmoil these day making the atmosphere much more hostile. And worst of it all it's been unnecessarily down to self made problems caused by incompetent twats.

It's clearly in defense where we've made the biggest strides, the whole back four is replaced with better when everyone's fit. Creatively though we've lost Solano, Dyer and Milner who were all capable of doing something (you could add Emre to that too) and only really brought in Jonas who's inconsistent at best. We've kept more clean sheets so far (24%) than the last 2 years (21% and 18%). The improvement is mainly on the road with 30% of away games giving us a clean sheet compared to just 11% for the last 2 years running. tinofbeans 91
Danny Guthrie = Scott Parker Jonas Gutierrez = Nolberto Solano Kind of agree, different kid of winger solano, for the record, would get you more assists! Joey Barton = James Milner ????? totally different kind of player. Alan Smith = Kieron Dyer ???? nope. alan smith = player that has not fitted into our system since day 1. dyer, when fit could add to our team, shame he had such a stiking attitude. Xisco = Alberto Luque Nacho Gonzalez = Matty Pattison. never seen either play.. Mark Viduka > Antoine Sibierski at least le sib tried though, viduka's a fat waster! Claudio Cacapa = David Rozehnal Jose Enrique > Celestine Babayaro yep... better player with a better attitude. Fabrizio Coloccini < Abdoulaye Faye faye and collocini would work together well. ones a sweeper, the other a big lump.... Habib Beye >> Stephen Carr should be >>>>>>>>>>>> Sebastien Bassong >> Peter Ramage as above

donaldstott 0
I think that we are really in need of somebody who can deliver a free-kick. IIRC we haven't scored direct from a free kick all season - I doubt there is another team in the league in that situation. In previous seasons Robert, Solano, Shearer and Emre chipped in with goals and/or very good deliveries.

A few years ago we have 3-4 decent options for most deadball situation. And it is not just there where the comparison fails. It's like saying that because player X faster then player Y, then player X is the better player even though he can't cross, pass or even control the ball 1/2 as well as player Y.
