Smooth Operator 10 Posted January 11, 2009 Share Posted January 11, 2009 Went to a auction today up at the Marriott at Gossy Park, it was a Customs and Excise Bonded Warehouse auction, had loads of fine art, funiture, lcd hd tv's, laptops, etc, etc. All really low reserves i.e £50 starting price for laptops and £100 for all tv's. So I was keen to see what some of the laptops would end up going for as my mate wanted one but couldn't attend so i had £300 to spend on their behalf, the first one up was a Toshiba Satellite with 1GB memory, 15.4" screen and I thought if i can get this for between £250 - £300 all in then jobs a reasonably good un, some stupid fucker bid £475 to get it then on top of that there is the 10% premium to the company running the auction then the 15% VAT, so a total of £593.75 to pay!! That's fucking ridiculous so I put it down to over eagerness of the bidder on the first laptop lot, i was wrong, next one is a Acer 5920 with 2gb memory 160 hard drive, webcam et all, bid that won - £500, 25% on top of that - £625!!! Fuck this I thought, I got exactly the same Acer model for £449 from Tesco exactly a year ago and they are coming to an auction for a bargain and ending up paying well over the odds, surely they'd have done their market research and would much prefer to buy in a store? There were some bargains had by a select few but i was struck my how much people were paying for "art" thinking the credit crunch isn't affecting some people at all who can think nowt about spending £1600 on a pair of Tiger portraits!! It's always the same - and the guys buying normally look VERY streetwise maybe they're paying so they can get hold of everyones account numbers etc etc?? Reckons there was a load of Dells going and that the deal was that whoever won the first auction got the option to buy the rest for the same price. If he chose not to then that price would be the one that anyone else could get them for. So instead of people being sensible and allowing the first one to go cheap, they got into a biddin war and shafted themselves.
