JaMoUsE 0
Manchester City have tabled an £8million bid for Newcastle's unhappy goalkeeper Shay Given. The first official offer for the Republic of Ireland international is expected to provoke a similar approach from Tottenham. Given's departure would result in a furious reaction from fans, even if they sympathise with the frustration of one of their most loyal players. Given rocked Newcastle last week when he announced through his solicitor Michael Kennedy that he had become 'despondent' with life at the crisis-torn club. The 32-year-old, who has been at St James' Park for more than 11 years, has four years left on his £40,000-a-week deal but has told manager Joe Kinnear he wants a move to a more successful club. City, who are looking for an experienced international goalkeeper, are the first club to make a bid following the release of Given's statement. Shay Given has voiced his unhappiness at Newcastle and could leave the club during the current transfer window with Manchester City and Spurs both keen Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has warned Kinnear he must generate funds to spend in the transfer window and he has been linked with Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc and Sheffield United's Paddy Kenny, once Given's Ireland understudy, as well as outfield players like Rangers skipper Barry Ferguson and Blackburn defender Stephen Warnock. As well as fighting to keep Given, Kinnear has four players in the middle of contract negotiations including Given's No 2 Steve Harper, who is stalling on his new deal. The 33-year-old, who has been at the club even longer than Given, is likely to keep his options open until the summer. Former England midfielder Nicky Butt has yet to sign his improved contract while captain Michael Owen has said he will re-open negotiations with the club at the end of the season. But one man who has put pen to paper is striker Shola Ameobi, who has signed a new four-year deal.

Ketsbaia 0
According to my fairly reliable source he wanted to stay, break the appearance record and set up here for the rest of his career but over the past few months he's started to get fed up of the goings on at the club and the Liverpool match was the final straw. He basically thinks we've got more chance of sinking like a stone than winning a trophy so he wants away.

scotty84 0
craig gorden - £10million, and City, the richest club in the world now, offer £8million for Given? Surely even Ashley must realise he can start a bidding war off between clubs with City involved if he is indeed willing to sell
Kid Dynamite 7169
Tbh if Arsenal offered £8mil we should accept as thanks for his loyalty. Man City and Spurs can pay double that though

Man City and Spurs can pay double that though sod off, they have enough money to give us more and if we're selling one of the best keepers in the league I'd rather we get some good money for him no matter who he goes to
Craig 6700
£8m is what we can realistically expect for him tbh. If it's more, it won't be much more.

Hadrian 0
cant see him leaving us for the likes of city or spurs , i think his statement last week was more of a kick up the arse to those upstairs . hope ashley doesnt pull a fast one and flog him . if one of the top 4 come in then i think that might turn givens head tho, unless ashley shows some bloody ambition
dave_prso9 0
£8m is nothing like what he is worth. £15m is much closer. Gutted if Shay leaves.
sammynb 3508
All Ashley will see is £££ so we'll be lucky to get £8m. And you can't blame Shay for wanting away from these bastards.
Tom 14013
Bear in mind the regime pushed to £12m for James Milner. If Given goes, surely he will go for a decent fee?

Will be a crying shame if he leaves. Ashley probably feels that he's already alienated the fair weather fans. Those left now are the hardcore ones, who will support the club virtually no matter what. Players like Shay Given are the reasons why teams like Newcastle can gather support around the world. If they are content to let them go the wider community support for Newcastle will dwindle, and in a few generations will be nothing more than the die-hard locals. Holden McGroin 6783
I dont think its a matter of whether we 'let him go' or not. If he WANTS to go then there is point in keeping him (pardon the pun). £12m+ will have to be minimum for me though.
TheMoog 0
The annoying thing is even though goalkeeping is about the most specialised position on the field it also tend to be the least valued for some reason - how many decent goalies go for top money? Not that many. I'd like to think we could push for a lot more than £8m but realistically it's probably unlikely. I think he'd regret going to Man City just because they're a nothing club, even with their money they'll always be in the shadow of Man Utd. Spurs are the same with Arsenal, I think Arsenal is his only likely destination unless he's lost his senses.

Craig 6700
For those who are saying he'd regret going to Citeh (and Spurs for that matter) because money aside, they're no better than us need to have a think like... Both these clubs are displaying one thing in abundance that we're not.... ambition! And that's one of the things that Shay is getting frustrated at.
