Juventus want Owen

JUVENTUS are joining the growing queue of clubs chasing Michael Owen.

The Italian giants have made an informal approach for the Newcastle striker — as have fellow Serie A club Genoa.

Juve’s interest in Owen goes back to 2004 when they tried to sign him from Liverpool only for the player to opt to join Real Madrid.

And the Toon skipper has not ruled out a move abroad despite his short one-year stay in Spain.

Approach

He is willing to consider any club that can offer him Champions League football.

Owen, 29, has been linked to Inter Milan — but there has been no approach yet from the Italian league leaders.

Owen is able to discuss his future with overseas clubs as his contract expires in the summer.

Manchester City, Everton and Spurs are also interested in the former Liverpool hitman.

Juventus have joined the race for Shay Given as Ireland's goalkeeper prepares to leave Newcastle United this month.

While Manchester City are believed to be favourites for the player, sources close to Given insisted over the weekend that there were more clubs interested than the three -- Tottenham, Manchester City and Arsenal -- listed in last Thursday's statement by his solicitor Michael Kennedy and a number of those are understood to be in Italy.

Giovanni Trapattoni personally recommended Given to a number of Italian clubs last year, commenting in September that in "personality and quality Shay is like Buffon."

Juventus's manager Claudio Ranieri is aware of Given's ability after his time at Chelsea and the club may take Trapattoni at his word and replace Gianluigi Buffon with the Newcastle goalkeeper.

"I speak with two or three of the big managers [at Italian clubs] and they ask me 'Can Shay play with us?'," Trapattoni said at that time. "The answer is yes."

Manchester City are believed to have made a bid of €100m for Buffon and are eager to make a statement about their intentions this month and that would certainly be a statement.

Juventus are tempted by City as they consider making a €75m bid for Lionel Messi, a move that would be funded by Buffon's sale. Given would then be brought in as replacement and could find himself playing in Italy in the run-up to Ireland's game against the world champions in April.

While Given is settled in Newcastle, a move abroad to a club which would guarantee immediate Champions League football would tempt him and he may consider it a more attractive option than City whose porous defence has conceded only two fewer league goals than Newcastle's this season and yesterday's cup exit to Nottingham Forest means that they, too, have some of the problems the Donegal man is fleeing.

Joe Kinnear insisted on Friday that Given was happy at the club but associates of the goalkeeper have claimed that privately the 'keeper is even more frustrated than his statement issued through Kennedy suggested.

"The club is a bloody shambles and Shay could have said it in much stronger terms," a friend said.

Given -- who kept a clean sheet yesterday as Newcastle drew 0-0 at Hull in the third round of the FA Cup -- believes there is no prospect of improvement in the short-term and with Michael Owen's future in doubt, things are likely to get worse.

While Given is contracted to the club until 2011, Kennedy has privately argued that Newcastle owe it to the player not to price him out of a move after the 11 years of service he has given to the club.

However, owner Michael Ashley has been hit hard by the credit crunch -- his company Sports Direct was valued at £1.7bn in February and is now worth around £150m -- and he has withdrawn Newcastle from sale after he failed to find a buyer.

In those circumstances, they may be tempted to get all they can for Given and loyalty could be another casualty of the recession.

If Martins missed that chance Owen had today when he was one on one with the keeper this place would have gone into meltdown.

When Martins has a stinker it is just passed over.

Goal records don't lie and Owen >>>>>>>>> Martins for us in goals per games.

We may never see the like of Owen at NUFC again, so you should be happy anyway. :(
