Ricky Hatton fight with Manny Pacquiao set for Las Vegas

Ricky Hatton's super-fight with Manny Pacquiao, worth £40 million, will take place in Las Vegas on May 2, according to Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum.

However, Hatton’s team are still attempting last-minute negotiations behind the scenes to bring the fight to the UK.

Hatton still harbours hopes of fighting Pacquiao at Wembley in front of 90,000 fans. Ray Hatton, the British fighter’s father and manager, said: “From our viewpoint, the fight is all but done and will go ahead. We’re just still negotiating the terms of the location. We want to have the fight over here for the British fans and we’ve been trying to put together a package to show that we can financially equal, or better, what they can do over there.”

However, Telegraph Sport understands that a UK-based fight has been ruled out by Home Box Office, the American cable giants, who are insisting the fight takes place in Nevada.

Pacquiao, hugely popular in the Philippines and a national icon, and Hatton, Britain’s most popular fighter, will share the spoils of a super-fight expected to generate £40 million, including revenue from pay-per-view television.

According to American promoter Arum, the only negotiation to be completed is whether the fight will be staged at the MGM Grand Garden Arena (capacity 15,000) or the Thomas & Mack Center, which can house a maximum of 19,000 spectators.

Hatton Snr also revealed that ’the Hitman’ will immerse himself in a 12-week training camp – which could start early in February in the UK, and then move to Florida before settling in Las Vegas a few weeks before the fight – under Floyd Mayweather Snr, the American trainer.

Mayweather was credited after Hatton’s victory over American Paulie Malignaggi in November as having instilled the basics back in the Mancunian’s fighting armoury, and returned him to his boxing skills and better footwork.

Hatton has also ruled out retiring if his contest with Pacquiao, who dismantled Oscar De La Hoya last month, is successful. Hatton has told his father that “if he wins his next fight, he’ll be looking at another year.” The ultimate goal is a re-match with Floyd Mayweather Jnr, who defeated Hatton in December 2007, the only blemish on his 12-year career record which stands at 45-1.

Ricky Hatton's light-welterweight fight with Filipino Manny Pacquiao is definitely on, BBC Sport understands.

Hatton's lawyer Gareth Williams has told BBC Sport that a signed contract was received at the weekend.

The fight will take place at Las Vegas' MGM Grand casino on 2 May, with full details to be announced this week.

The news follows weeks of uncertainty with Pacquiao's camp reportedly wanting a 60-40 split, however Hatton's camp insists he will get an equal share.

"We have got the contract, signed by Manny," Williams said.

Hatton has yet to sign the contract - purely due to logistics with Williams being in London.

"It won't be a problem and we'll announce the fight at a press conference on Thursday," he added.

"All the pressure is off now."

Pacquiao, 30, is currently regarded as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter, a status he confirmed by beating Oscar de la Hoya in December.

The fight had been in danger of collapsing earlier this month.

But last week Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer, negotiating on Mancunian Hatton's behalf, confirmed a signed contract from the Philippines had been received.

On Friday, Pacquiao's promoters Top Rank had declared that the fight was back on.

And Williams confirmed to BBC Sport on Monday that everything is in place and an agreement has now been reached and recieved.

Hatton, 30, has been chasing Pacquiao ever since the latter demolished American legend De la Hoya inside nine rounds.

Hatton, who has only lost once in 46 fights, beat American Paulie Malignaggi in November and had made no secret of his interest in meeting the winner of Pacquiao-De la Hoya.

With the Pacquiao fight in danger of collapse, Hatton's camp had also been chasing De la Hoya himself or a re-match with Floyd Mayweather Jr - the only man to defeat Hatton.

But a fight with Pacquiao, who has lost three of his 48 fights with two draws, is now on and promises to be one of the fights of the year.

One way out of the credit crunch. Put every penny you own or can raise on pacquiao.

Add the fact that I want Hatton to win and you can see pacquaio is a certainty.

Not be as clear cut as that imo. People seem to be to hasty in writing Hatton off after his defeat by Mayweather but they forget it's his only defeat. They then seen the Pacman defeat De La hoya but conveniently forget that La Hoya was no where near right for that fight.

I know you're only as good as your last fight but its a hard one to call I reckon, can't wait for it.

Styles make fights, and for me Hatton has always got caught a little too often for my liking, Pacquaio's speed will be the deciding factor.

I agree and because of this i think Hatton may stand a chance, i think his style of jab - hook - hold, if done effectively wont allow Pacquaio to do his damage. I think Pacquaio will be a HUGE challenge to Hatton but he isnt the same standard as Mayweather, close fight but Hatton just to edge it.....i hope.

Same rules as the football but if we want a site to keep running what can we do? :)

I might stay up and watch it but the worrying thing is It's a while away and I have a fridge full of beer and a day of rehearsals tomorrow so it might get messy ;)
