As an arm chair fan whose been to more games at my local club than st james, I've got to post and give huge credit to the newcastle fans for the last 2 games (a wigan and h liverpool, obviously!!)

 

I do wonder about the "best fans" tag. I think at times it applies (considering our lack of succss), but there are also times where we are quiet and sometimes a bit too quick to jump on certain players.

 

However, despite 88 terrible minutes at wigan and 90 terrible minutes against liverpool, the fans have been absolutely amazing. The noise at times has been deafening, and the Wigan fans could only be heard at about 70 mins in. Despite the ridiculousness of today's spectacle, the fans have again been fantastic, including booing and drowning out you'll never walk alone (which I've not heard drowned out before) and randomly cheering possession when we've reached 2 passes and ended up giving the ball away with the 3rd.

 

So, huge props to the fans

 

Lets just have a thread where we forget about the players, manager, chairman, owner, cronies, and big up the fans for putting in some fantastic performances in terrible (newcastle and non-newcastle related) circumstances

The "big" games like Liverpool always show a good performance by the fans - its the ones against Stoke. Bolton etc that usually disappoint.

the average fan is too critical at times but yeah we are a cut above the rest. i been to stamford bridge as a neutral and 3000 benfica fans are loader than 40000 chelski fans. you have all these big prem clubs and their fans are pants tbh.. im sure alot of you who have been there an seen it agree

yeah, chelsea fans are terrible. though, the worst i've experienced 1st hand in the premiership have been fulham's. been to craven cottage the past two years and you hear fuck all from them.

The Liverpool fans were shocking today, they were that bad that I wasn't even bothered when it got past 2 because they weren't.

Firstly I echo NJS's comments about the big games, we as fans, definitely step up our game when we play the likes of the top 4. That is wrong, we should be giving 110% at every game then maybe fortress St James' would really exist as it used to.

 

Secondly, I think we've lost our ability as a fanbase to control situations. Where are the chants? when was the last time a new song was aired? you look at the likes of Liverpool and they bring out actual songs for players/ situations. We've sang the same old crap for years now, theres no moving stirring anthem like Liverpools YNWA. No proper piss ripping anti-away fans stuff like "Poor Little Hammer" or "Liverpool Slums". Personally, I think "Toon Toon" is one of the most cringeworthy chants ever. Bring back some of the old stuff, we need people leading the songs as we used to have in the Gallowgate/ Leazes. "Give me an N.. N N, give me and E.. E E ......etc". Then theres the players stuff, I do believe that Owen doesnt appear to get the praise he deserves simply because we dont have a song for him! Oba lays a ball in, Owen scores we sing "Oba Oba Fe.." because we havent got an Owen one!

 

Finally, we need to properly co-ordinate the singing, even the Robson Wonderland yesterday didnt work, Level 7 started it but by the time the Gallowgate and East Stand joined in L7 had stopped, a single ringing chorus stadium wide would put the shits up most teams and give our lot a proper boost.

 

I do think we have one of the best sets of fans in the country but I think we've lost our spark, our ingenuity and most importantly the Geordie wit that used to be a major factor.

I agree completely PP. While the Liverpool fanfs didnt sing much for away support, at least when they did they had a number of different actual songs (as such) while the most we muster up is the odd "toon toon". Blaydon races is hardly sung (even when it is its frigging wrong) and as you say we have so few songs for the players "one Shay Given"? surely we can do better? Whistling over the top of YNWA or "You Support is Shit" etc dont really count in my book and as also cringe worthy imo. I think we're better than that.

I know Toonultras have made numerous new songs up, but they just haven't caught on as a whole, the only exception being "Oh Gutierrez" but i bet most of the people in SJP still don't know the words. & Away games (on the coaches / in the pubs) is the only place where the new songs are heard really (and the old one's like Magpie Ranger/Geordie Alloutte) etc.

 

We could do what Man Utd do, where they have a designed bar pre-match, and sing new and current songs, which could grow from there, although it's just getting permission and setting everything up etc etc.

 

And i agree that SJP needs to be a fortress again, but i think nowadays the only way you can do it is if something happens on the pitch (ie. geordie injustice / success)...

Well Im in the NE corner, near enough to hear the Ultras when theyre in good voice and all I can honestly say Ive heard sang is renditions of "toon toon", "Newcastle, newcastle, newcastle.....", "Oba Oba fey" and "stand up if you love the toon" oh and the odd "Habib Beye Beye". If there are new songs doing the rounds then we as fans arent doing enough to get them promoted and known by the majority of fans,

 

Thats not a criticism of the Singing section, its critical of us all, we live in the most technological age ever where it would be possible to write a new song in the morning and have half the crowd knowing it by kick off yet we dont do anything of the sort. How come back in the 70s all the fans knew all the words to all the songs going yet now 3 quarters of the ground dont even know they exist?

 

Maybe if all message boards, websites and fanzines had a concerted effort to get these things sorted then we'd stand a chance, it must happen elsewhere as like I say, the likes of Liverpool have new songs every week or so.

My Sbragia chant didn't catch on yesterday like. I think chants generally have to be to Black Lace tunes rather than NWA.

 

The NUSC should run a "create a chant" contest.

think the lack of atmosphere comes from events which have gone on off the pitch. however, it could be argued that the players need the backing more than ever. think the atmosphere could do with being a bit more hostile (within reason) if the ground is ever to become a place where teams actually fear going. best place for atmosphere seems to be stoke this year!

I've always said the away fans should have a section at pitch level.

 

The best atmosphere's are invariably the result of banter between sets of fans, when that's going on up in the heavens, it never stretches around the stadium.
