Does anyone know anything about the above? As I'm in need of one to hook up to the car CD player. But there seems to be loads of different options kicking about and I'm in need of some advice.

Ive got one of them Griffin iTrips which is fairly good, think it was about £30 from ASDA, it transmits to the radio and has a built in charger as well.

Its a funny one, when Im around here then 88.9 is near perfect CD quality. Trouble is if you go on a long journey then you find local stations intefere and you have to hunt out new ones. It can be a pain but general day to day use its fine. I've never looked at it properly but Im fairly sure its straight forward to wire the iPod into the Aux jack of the car stereo. The only pain being the running of the wire and getting a good place to dock it.

The best option is to get a head-unit that has an iPod docking cable, although admittedly this is the most expensive option and not all cars can have after-market head-units.

The docking unit / stereo with an aux input socket would be the way to go.

 

With the transmitters, the quality is (unsurprisingly) like thin, tinny FM. As Pud says, the signal is constantly losing strength as you go through different areas. I've found that inside the M25 or around Leeds it's almost impossible to find an fm frequency that isn't already being used.

 

The cheap way to do it would be to get a cassette-based car stereo and one of those tape adapter things.

Aye I've got an iTrip and I have the same problems with FM frequencies and the sound goes to shit if you drive under electrical wires etc. Most of the time I use the old skool tape connector cos I'm a gyppo with a tape player in his car.

 

I looked into getting a stereo with ipod connection etc, but it was gonna be a pain in the arse because of the size of the stereo compared to the standard one in the car.

I use a small radio transmitter one, was twenty quid some time ago, works fine, set on 107.6 no interference worth mentioning and I drive to and from Aberdeen every week so pass loads of places where I could expect to pick up "noise".

 

Only thing that does get it, is when my phone drops out and back in to coverage

Also be warned that if you have the 2nd Gen iPod touch, some of the in-car adapters won't charge your iPod unless you buy a special dongle.
