Stoke without Delap

Stoke City throw-in specialist Rory Delap has said the latest injection in his shoulder is the final opportunity to cure his long-standing injury.

 

Delap had a further jab on Monday, after last week's cortisone injection failed to solve the problem.

 

The 32-year-old told BBC Radio Stoke: "The injection I had on Monday is the last chance because I've had them all.

 

"The doctor said that if it works I shouldn't be able to feel anything, so hopefully it will work."

 

The Republic of Ireland international had been having injections before games and during half-time intervals in order to continue playing for the Potters after falling and injuring his right shoulder.

 

Delap was in obvious pain when his only attempt to take a throw-in during Saturday's goalless draw with Fulham travelled just a few yards.

 

After being substituted mid-way through the second half, Delap watched the rest of the game from the bench with ice applied to the injured area.

 

"My shoulder was heavily strapped, so that restricted my movement," said Delap.

 

"But if it hadn't have been strapped I wouldn't have been able to play.

 

"It definitely affected me. It was hurting when I was running and it was in my head that I could get hurt if I fell over," he added.

 

Seven of Stoke's 17 Premier League goals this season have come as a result of Delap's long throw-ins.

A lot has been made of his throws It will be interesting to see what will happen should he need surgery or to rest for a few games to fix the problems. These injections make it so blatently obvious that Stoke will be fucked without Delap!

This is true, can remember him getting a canny distance on them! I'm waging Stoke might try a cheeky bid for Onyewu come the transfer window!

you would think the obvious thing for him to do would be to, STOP taking stupid throw in's that only have a positive result every 10+ throws, or is it literally the only reason Pulis is putting him in the team? I really don't get this long range throw stuff, a team get virtually anywhere into the oppositions half, instead of building on the possesion in someone's half they time and time again chuck it randomly into the box with the hope that all teams defend as shockingly as Arsenal. Granted it works from time to time and can put a team under pressure at times close to the end, but they proved against us there's a half decent side without it.

it worked a few times which is why Pulis is sticking with it!

It works enough, basically it's just a better version of the long-ball/set piece team.

Still gutted he left Reading. Very strong centre back and has always had a long throw on him.
