I did something silly as I was in a hurry. I closed it with the power off button as it was taking ages to shut down.

Now it won't come back to life.

Vista.

Screen is black and the mouse won't even light up.

Did you forget to dedicate the ritual 3 drops of blood to St. Gates? :aye:

Sounds kinda bad if it won't boot/power on at all, can you get to bios or a post screen or anything?

Have I somehow turned the screen off?

Is there a button for that sort of thing? :aye:

Does the screen not come on at all? surely you should get some dos/command line when you first turn it on? Try starting it up keep hitting F8, that should bring up boot options, there should be a boot in safe mode. try that see if that works. If you can get to there run some scans. Have you got CCleaner? thats good for registry problems.

Ok.

I guessed it wasn't turning itself off properly so whipped the battery out.

Have restarted in safe mode.

It loaded something and now says STOP with loads of numbers after it.

What now?

Battery back in with some onning and offing?

If I was you, turn it off, stick the battery back in F8 again, boot it in safe mode (if it gets that far) if you can successfully boot it in safe mode, restart your computer and try booting normally. If it still doesnt get to the main windows screen then go back into safe mode and run some antivirus/registry cleaner.

It asked startup repair?

I've gone for that and it's running some diagonsticky things... :aye:

Happy days.

Good luck! Its a right fuck on when Comps go down! If its got to a diagnostics screen it should find the problem. I take it your on another computer, if so get a USB pen, download Ccleaner, Advanced Windows Care V2 (both free) boot it into safe mode, install them programmes and run them. Should work! I think both of the programmes are now compatible with Vista too.

Fop and Ant where were you?...Clueless bufoons. B)
That seemed complex.. I was about to say that mine does that sometimes but if I button bash (especially enter) it comes back on. Glad I kept my nose out now. :D

Bah that was going to be my next suggestion; headbutt the keyboard until it submits to your will. :aye:

lol sorry never noticed this thread till this morning,

was outta the office most of yesterday =D

On a side note about having a wee usb pen filled with tools, it's ultra handy

I normally have a few apps on mine, like ccleaner, putty tcpview etc etc

but http://portableapps.com/ is seriously handy

has tons of applications ranging from openoffice to virus scanners and system tools , browsers and email clients which will auto update etc

Looks good thanks.

I swear this incident was some kind of payback from Vista which seemed very unhappy when I set Firefox as the default browser. :aye:

Vista doesn't like anything, you've got to win an 8 hour staring competition with it just to install a decent defragmentor.

However in 2020 it should run fine. B)
