Contract delays add to Newcastle uncertainty

The amount of people out of contract in the summer is really scary. I've said a few times I think we'll be alright this season (not counting my chickens by any means) but the real worry is next season when we could easily have the worst squad since we got into the Premier League.

Which of the players coming to the end of their contract would you offer a new deal?

Difficult to say because I don't trust the current regime to bring in adequate replacements.

Looking at the players who could go I don't think it would be that hard to replace most of them tbh.

The only player I wouldn't want to lose is Owen but I don't think he's ever had any intention of sticking around longer than he has to anyway, the rest can be replaced easily enough even if it means promoting youth players to replace Harper, Edgar, Cacapa etc.

Viduka, Owen and Ameobi walk and you think we have the youth to replace them?

Martins and Duff first choice front line.

I didn't say they could all be replaced from within, I said apart from Owen the rest should be easy to replace.

Viduka's decent when he's fit but he's hardly a World beater and spends more time injured, I wouldn't be in a rush to replace Shola either.

And where do you reckon we're gonna get the money to replace them?

Also, don't we have an option of a further year on Viduka's contract?

In an ideal world, I wouldn't disagree too much. But we Shola, Owen and Viduka away for a start. Fair enough, one isn't good enough and the other two have spent a lot of time injured etc. but I honestly can't see us attracting good quality replacements. Also, Harper is a quality no. 2 and it's not necessarily the case that he'd be easily replaced by promoting Krul or Foster. Even if it is the case that these two are good enough it seems criminally negligent to let him go for nowt - should that happen. Also, while Edgar and Cacapa might not be anything special I'd question who we've got in the youth ranks who are at their level. Especially considering we only have Taylor, Collocini and Bassong with any first team experience at CB. On top of the fact we're short on players anyway and all the sounds coming out of the club seem to suggest frugality.

To start with I don't think we need to replace all 3 strikers if they do go anyway as we've got too many strikers on the books as it is, it's hard to say at the moment without knowing who the manager will be but you could see Kinnear favouring a striker like Smith if he was still here, Owen would be the only one we would struggle to replace but even if we can't get a player of his quality I think we could get someone who would offer us more balance in attack.

Krul said the other day that if Harper signed a new contract then he would leave, it wasn't the best way to go about it but I can see where he's coming from in that he wants to push on with his career, the club should sell Harper in January if they want to get money for him but even if he was on a long term contract I don't think he would bring in much more than a million.

I don't even think of Edgar as a first team player so I don't think he would be a loss, Bassong has looked impressive so far but it's still early to say how good he will be once he settles in, if he keeps performing at the standard he has so far then I wouldn't have a problem with those 3 being our main centre backs.

If they leave then the club will have to replace them, if Ashley is still here next Summer then I think the club is off the market so I've no reason to think that they won't be replaced, whether it's going out and paying £10 million for someone like we did with Coloccini or getting a player of Jonas quality on a free.

And yes we have an option of a further year on Viduka's contract but I don't think we will bother.

It's all very well saying we've got too many strikers but they're either injury-prone, shit or both. Plus decent strikers are expensive. At the very least I'd say we need two good ones coming in if the 3 in question leave. Look at who'll be left and have a look at where we are at present too.

Btw, I'm not suggesting the recruitment has been all bad. Bassong, Collocini and Jonas look good signings although the former is very raw and I think he's mainly a good signing because he looks decent and cost nowt. The trouble is, we've already got a small sqaud and we can't really afford to be 'hitty-missy' with recruitment because I would say every player who goes out needs someone equal or better coming the over way. Or it's another season battling relegation. Genuinely battling it as well.

My point is that Ashley barely dipped his hand in his pocket whenever he was sitting among the fans and being Mr. Popular, what makes you think that's he's going to splash out now when he knows that most of the fans despise him?

You're living in cloud cuckoo land if you think that fat cunt Ashley is ever going to spend any more money on the team ever again.

Because if players leave then he won't have any choice except to replace them, I don't think he went into last Summer with the intention of spending nothing either.

He will have a choice, he can refuse to recruit any more and demand that we play the kids or he can inform Wise to be scouting for the bargain buys. I think he did go into last season's transfer market with the aim of spending very little, hence why we did spend very little. I have very little confidence in him to let us spend any significant funds whatsoever.

Then what about the outlay in the two windows prior to that?

Players out of contract at the end of the season and therefore free to negotiate with other clubs from Jan 1st are:

My guess would be

Cacapa to a crap European team

Owen to Everton or Citeh

Harper to Boro

Butt to Wigan

Ameobi staying

Edgar to Leeds or the like

Viduka to Wigan Fulham or Stoke

£9 million in the Summer wasn't a massive amount but considering the circumstances of the whole review I didn't really have a problem with it, the January was clouded by Keegan coming in halfway through and following a bid that was accepted for Woodgate Keegan said he was the only player he went for, unless he was lying to the fans again.

Ashleys said hes not prepared to put money into the club any longer, what reason do we have to think he'll suddenly do it.

"The club still owes millions of pounds in transfer fees. I shall be paying out many more millions over the coming year to pay for players bought by the club before I arrived."

-Ashley, 14 September 2008

In January 2010 he'll be able to start paying a bit more towards new players.

The tax raises will force him to "invest" less by then though.

if we are relegated - thanks to soopa mike and his grand "plan" that you advocated, then which player of 10m will play in the championship.

Unless Denis the DOF persuades someone against all the odds.

you mean covering up for his employers don't you.

I'm pleased for you, that you don't have a problem with the state the club is in BTW. How expectations have slipped in the last 18 months.
