JawD 99
Overall, its a good thing. Trouble is, its ran by Man and thats where the trouble starts. Yes I think a bloke called Jesus born to Mary/Jospeh was around and yes I think he was likely a prophet etc. Either way, his teachings are hardly wrong and I think overall a Christian outlook is not a bad thing. However, acts carried out by the Church in the name of Christianity are a whole different subject but again, thats down to Man and not the religion or teachings themselves. I think Religion is a good thing, but alot of things done in the name of Religion are pretty fucked up. More over, I think some kind of belief gives good moral foundation (of course there are exceptions, but generally), which is what I think much of todays society lacks (younger generation esp). The only problem I have with the ethos is that instead of teaching people to be good for its own sake or for the sake of our fellow man, we are told to be good in service to a god who will reward us. Furthermore good works are rewardless without worship of said god.
Ketsbaia 0
i like Tommy Tiernan's take on jesus considering where he was supposedly from and who he ran about with he really should've been dark skinned, small and resembling Danny De'vito but no, we've turned him into BeeGee Jesus, 6ft, pale, with long flowing hair etc Tiernan is brilliant I get the feeling Jesus was just the Paul Daniels of his day. He did tricks and had an over inflated sense of self. I never get the idea that if you're bad you'll burn in hell either. Surely the last thing Satan, if he existed, would want to do is punish you if you've refused to live by the word of God?
ewerk 31588
Personally I've nothing major against religions (not in this thread anyhow). But a friend of mine is beginning to bother me with his constant references to Jesus and God and whatnot, to the point where after a few beers I'm finding it difficult to hold my tongue. Sounds to me like it's got nothing to do with religion and maybe it's just that your mate is a bit of a twat.

Is this a new development with this guy or has he always been like this? He didn't have a near-death experience in his life recently, lose a family member, anything like that? It is quite new. started a month or so ago. He did break up with his lass recently who moved to America with a pack of Chiristians.
SloopJohn 0
if you're curious about Christianity i'd read 'Mere Christianity' by C.S. Lewis - it pretty much covers everything regarding the matter on an intellectual and intellegible level without being preachy or pious.

Zathras 296
if you're curious about Christianity i'd read 'Mere Christianity' by C.S. Lewis - it pretty much covers everything regarding the matter on an intellectual and intellegible level without being preachy or pious. You could just read the Bible I suppose. Bit wordy. You read Bible. First thing that's made me laugh out loud in days. Thanks Alex. . I'm trying to remember a time when Jesus of Nazareth actually claimed to be the son of God or any-such. The closest that I can recall in the re-tellings of the story from his disciples is his not denying it when they asserted it. My recollection of his teachings is also more along the lines of a fundamental belief of honoring your fellow man being the way to "a better life" in "the world to come," not necessarily meaning that it must be done in service to any kind of a God. To be sure Matthew states that when asked which was the greatest of the commandments Jesus responded : "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' "On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:36-40). It seems to me that the first is relatively meaningless as it has little to do with the way one actually lives ones' life. The way you honor the first he taught was the honor the second. Also, I still think it telling that the man was basically nailed to a cross for saying be nice to each other. What real threat was there to the establishment in his teachings that led to their great fear? Merely his popularity? Or was it really that if the establishment truly incorporated his teachings which were hedged within the language of religion they would destroy the organization as it stood and eliminate the need for established leaders?
