Oba crocked for another month?

Despite the lucrative financial package on offer, Venables finally rebuffed Newcastle's advances at the end of a long day of negotiation, turning down the opportunity to become the club's interim manager due to the uncertainty surrounding their future.

Newcastle director of football Dennis Wise was unable to provide Venables with any assurances over the length of time that the manager would remain in charge with the club up for sale, and the insecurity of that short-term thinking put Venables off the role.

Now Newcastle's billionaire owner, the sports-retail mogul Mike Ashley, is poised to take a more hands-on role in recruiting a temporary manager to ensure that the club remain a marketable commodity. Two further candidates are set for talks today.

Another former Tottenham and England manager, Glenn Hoddle, had been tipped to take the helm, but it is understood that he has now been ruled out.

Venables, 65, was understood to be seeking a number of months to revive Newcastle's flagging fortunes, rather than the match-to-match contract offered by Ashley's representatives during two days of meetings in London.

His first meeting with Wise, vice-president Tony Jimenez and managing director Derek Llambias took place at Chelsea Harbour on Wednesday, when a highly incentivised offer was put on the table.

Venables was also told that, in contrast to previous manager Kevin Keegan, he would have complete control over all football matters, but that failed to sway him.

There was no official comment from St James' Park and Venables' agent, Leon Angel, who was involved in negotiations with Newcastle officials throughout yesterday, declined to speak in detail.

"I really can't make any comment at this stage until Terry makes an announcement himself," Angel said.

Venables' fellow former Tottenham manager, George Graham, distanced himself from the role and suggested that Newcastle should look overseas for Keegan's replacement.

"A few years ago I would have loved a crack at Newcastle, because it's a massive club, but they've not won anything for 40 years," Graham said. "They say up there that everyone wants a Geordie to manage the club but that's nonsense now. We're in a world market and if you're good enough it doesn't matter what nationality you are."

Graham added that Newcastle needed a manager to have an immediate impact, "because they have to get results quickly otherwise they will be dragged into the relegation zone and it will be hard to get out of it".

Caretaker manager Chris Hughton will remain in charge for the game against Blackburn on Tyneside tomorrow. Newcastle have lost their three matches since Keegan's resignation on Sept 4.

Keegan's exit provoked a fierce backlash among Newcastle fans, whose protests prompted Ashley to put the club, who are next to bottom in the Premier League, up for sale.

Llambias. Jimenez and Wise were all absent as Newcastle were eliminated from the Carling Cup by Tottenham Hotspur in front of a 15-year low crowd of 20,577 at St James' Park on Wednesday.

And just to compound Newcastle's misery, Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins has now been ruled out for a month due to a knee injury.

It's easy to promise these things when you think you're not going to be there in January.

Surely it wasn't his knee that was injured in the first place?
