NEWCASTLE United goalkeeper Ole Soderberg's injury heartache has been deepened by the knowledge he was set for call up to Sweden's Under-21 side.

Soderberg faces two months on the sidelines after breaking his left wrist warming up for last Saturday's Academy game away to Liverpool.

And Newcastle's goalkeeping coach Paul Barron has revealed the 18-year-old – signed from Swedish side Hacken in January – was on the brink of a career milestone after impressing for club and country since his move to St James's Park.

"Ole's broken his hand – he fell over warming up for an Academy game," said Barron.

"It's unfortunate, as he was just about to get picked for Sweden's Under-21 team, and he's only 18. He's already played at Under-19s level.

"It's a significant injury, and he'll be out for at least two months.

"Injuries never come at a good time, but this is even more unfortunate as I'd just had a call from the Under-21s, saying he was going to make the squad.

"He's a great lad, and he's already getting bored walking around with his arm in a sling."

Meanwhile, Newcastle's reserves are back in action on Monday night, when they take on Sheffield United at Blue Flame in a Central League Cup fixture (7pm).

Academy director Richard Money – who has taken charge of the club's second string on a temporary basis after the departure of Adam Sadler – will be without a number of players through injury.

Frank Wiafe Danquah – injured in the 3-0 midweek away defeat to Bolton Wanderers – has joined Wesley Ngo Baheng, Andy Carroll, Kazenga LuaLua and Tamas Kadar in the treatment room.
