Red Dwarf, Nirvana etc.

They never represent the 80's.

Both at their peak in the 90's.

You could include the Simpsons and Seinfeld if you just look at when they were conceived.

Both were started and going well in the mid/late-80's.

Just because they weren't as fashionable as they were later doesn't matter. You might as well say that combats weren't invented until after 2000.

Nirvana epitomise the 90s lashback against the 80's

Maybe, maybe not, but from within the 80's..... or do you think Nevermind was Nirvana?

What is really bad though is the media's obsession with calling this decade the "noughties".

Which basically no one says, apart from the media when doing shit like this.

It's embarrassing really.

By the way, the most annoying thing about the 80's is the current obsession with them. Which will no doubt be replaced by an obsession with the 90's and so on and so forth.

I know Dave Grohl was a replacement drummer on it, but to say it wasn't Nirvana is a bit far fetched given that they went through drummers faster than Spinal Tap.

What'll the next decade be called?

I can't wait until "I love the Decade Between the Noughties and the Twenties" starts on BBC2.

Regardless of when they were fromed, Nirvana are icons of the 90's.

Maybe, but they released their best stuff in the 80's. :snakehips:

Although Nirvana does show how daft the whole "XXties" thing is - formed, released and were pretty successful in the 80's, were massive in the early 90's, but by the late 90's Cobain had been dead for half a decade or more.

Inspired by Ketsbaia's shirt, what was the best and worst of the 80's?

Best

They ended

Worst

Enya

Big hair

Glam Metal

Unrestrained synthesizer use

Maggie Thatcher

The War on drugs

Yoof TV

Concept movies

Yazz and the plastic Population

etc.

I quite liked that. As my formative years were in the eighties, I liked/like the look of ladies from that era. Big hair, shoulder pads, power dressing, that Robert Palmer video all coincide with my sexual awakening.

Quick everyone, an opinion fight! Get your clichés out! :snakehips:

Aye, but you can't look back and experience it. It's a bit like Keegan and NUFC.

Nirvana's best stuff from the 80s? You mean the one album? Unplugged is the best thing they ever did anyway and the only thing that doesn't sound dated now.

Aye, but you have no taste or judgement.

Did they fuck :snakehips:

Unplugged/In Utero/Incesticide >>> All.

Best of the rest = Bleach > Nevermind

That's from a hindsight perspective though. You gotta be there.

I'll bet you were in Seattle back in '85 too.

And once Thundercats finished of an afternoon you headed down the club to mosh along to Nirvana.

Riles me up when Cobain is rated as some kind of Rock God, when in truth his talent is dwarfed by his hype.

Clearly talented, but he's not the messiah he's very naughty corpse

Benefiting from the Early Death Syndrome, which inflates the perception of a performers ability to incredible levels.

It's nowt compared to how riled you'll be by Winehouse's popularity in 10 year

If only they'd formed in the 70's, it could have all been so different. :snakehips:

Everything that made him a rock god wasn't exactly deliberate.

He wasn't the best singer or the best guitar player but he did speak for and unite a lot of people.

Job done.

Which is why a whole load of people killed themselves when they heard he was dead.

:snakehips:

Doesn't prove anything Tom man. He wasn't a spokesman, he was an idol. People killing themselves because he died is just proof there are a whole load of fucking idiots in the world.
