Shepherd tells Ashley: Get out of Toon with whatever you can get

Former Newcastle United owner Freddy Shepherd has advised Mike Ashley to take what he can get when selling the crisis-torn club.

Ashley bought Shepherd out for £134m last year but has decided to let the club go following the Kevin Keegan shambles and a huge fans' revolt against him.

The Toon chief is hoping for around £400m but Shepherd believes a figure of £230 is more realistic.

This would give Ashley a small profit after all the cash he has ploughed into the club, having insisted Newcastle was in terrible shape financially when he took over.

However, Shepherd fumed: 'It is absolutely ridiculous to suggest that. Everything was covered. The only reason he had to pay a large portion of the debt was the cost of the stadium.

'But if you look at today’s prices, it was a great deal to build and expand St James’ Park when we did.

'When he took over, what he didn’t realise was that he had to pay off the mortgage on the stadium. If the Halls lost control, the money had to be repaid immediately.

'If he doesn’t want to capitalise on United, if he loves the club so much, then he will sell for it’s true worth, which I think is about £230m.

'He would get a buyer at that price. He should get back what he has put in. That would prove he does love the club and is doing right by the club rather than what is right for him.

'A lot of people can buy football clubs. It has now been proved, not many people can run them.

'As far as the money is concerned, he should take the advice he is giving — and stop being a cry-baby. He seems to be whingeing.'

Shepherd added in The Sun: 'We didn’t have any problems when I left. Everything was arranged. There was no way the club was going anywhere but up.

'When I left, plans were already in place to bring in new money, to expand the ground again and develop the site with a new hotel, casino and other enterprises.

'All funding was arranged. It had everything, new stadium, new shop, the land, training ground. Everything.'

The return of Keegan as manager is seen by fans as the answer to Newcastle’s problems and Shepherd said: 'Like everyone else, I don’t know exactly what has been said between them.

'It would certainly be in Ashley’s interests to persuade Kevin to resume normal business - even though he is looking to sell.'

I think unfortunately he seems to think that becuase we want Ashley out we want him back in. Which is bollocks. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back I'm afraid, probably dressed in Emperors clothes and riding a donkey into St James while throwing rose petals..or something. Twat.

As long as he doesn't expect him to carry him into the box!
