Guest Stevie
I've been saying this for 7 or 8 years and most people scoff at the suggestion but it's true. If given had've been in goal for Juventus when we beat them 1-0, it would've ended 0-0, there you are.. What I don't like about Trappatoni, is him saying Given should leave for a top Serie A club, why the fuck should he? The top English clubs are head and shoulders better. It's hugely disrespectful to Newcastle United, a cklub with a better watch going support than any Italian team over the last three years. What it is, he's going senile I reckon and thinks we're Boro, because he mentions he played against Given as manager of VFB Stuttgart, I can't even remember us playing them, am I wrong? Boro played them in the UEFA, I think the old cunt must think we're Boro. Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni feels Shay Given can be put in the same bracket as Gianluigi Buffon. Given has been a stalwart for his country for the past decade and produced another impressive display in Wednesday's 0-0 draw with Montenegro. The Newcastle United goalkeeper pulled off a fine stop to deny Montenegro's Stevan Jovetic to maintain Ireland's unbeaten start to the 2010 World Cup qualifying programme. Trapattoni has been hugely impressed by Given and believes he can be rated the equal of the world's most expensive goalkeeper Buffon. Commands team "I have seen many, many games in the past and I know Shay's quality," said Trapattoni. "I [Trapattoni's team] played against Newcastle with Stuttgart and I know he is a very, very good goalkeeper. "Last night, when the ball was deflected, I saw it going towards the post and I thought it was a goal. "But Shay saved it and for me, he is one of the best in Europe, the same as Buffon. "He has a very, very good personality and he commands the team, but quietly. "We have a saying in Italy that once you praise somebody too much, you have to touch wood, but his performance last night was very good."

Guest Stevie
Is it fuck true. It's complete bollocks. OK then it must be because you say so. Shay's had one bad season in goal for us in 10 years, and I wouldn't swap him for anyone, certainly the best shot stopper I've seen.

I think Buffon is Given's equal (at the very least) in shot stopping and better in every other area. Edited September 12, 2008 by alex

Tom 14021
I would say Buffon is better marginally because of his International success but Given is still World Class.
Guest Stevie
By a million miles the best keeper in the Premiership. Put Cech behind wor back four for ten years and we'll see how good he is. I've seen Cech have some utter utter howlers, not least when he gifted TWO goals to Turkey in June. Never seen Given do that twice in a game. Another wank overrated keeper is Artur Boruc. Guest alex
That's only one game man. Cech is better than Given imo. Given's a world class shot-stopper. Cech's a world class keeper. I'd rate van der Sar better too as an all-round keeper. Don't get me wrong though, Given is class.
Tooj 17
I would say Buffon is better marginally because of his International success but Given is still World Class. Given is a world class shot stopper, but he's not world class. He lacks in other areas that would make him world class such as his distribution and the commanding of his box. Also you have said several times in the past how you don't watch Italian football or rate it for that matter. I'd say they are both equal in shot stopping capabilities btw but Buffon outclasses Given in his distribution and his commaning of the box. Fop 1
Commanding the box though... he did have to order titus and boumsong around god knows if buffon could've done any better there. I imagine shouting things at Bramble is probably counter productive..... now a remote control system.

The Arsenal game away last season where he completely missed the ball and allowed Gallas to score. Against Villa at home where he let it through his legs (Agbonlohor?). Given hasn't made such a momentus fuck up for ages. And a world class goalkeeper, such as Buffon, rarely does (one a season if it's a bad year for him). Consistently poor at that. Have you forgotten about that? Because Cech's never had a run like that in his Chelsea career. tinofbeans 91
Stevie, givens a great keeper no doubt definitely in the top 4 or 5 premiership keepers I've seen. But he's won little or nothing... and he's inferior to buffon in most areas. how's his kicking? how's his communication skills, how's his penalty saving skills. his cross interception. All are inferior to cassillas, buffon, van der sar, and probably even Cech as well. The only thing he is their equal on is shot stopping. You need to make the distinction between very very good, and great.

Guest alex
Given's form was poor last season though. Consistently poor at that. Have you forgotten about that? Because Cech's never had a run like that in his Chelsea career. he was rushed back from injury twice though tbh think thats what did it. this season, wasn't rushed back and back to form, don't think it's coincidence Neither do I particularly. But you can point to any run of bad form and give an excuse. And if Given was suffering from that, he would have known and should have said he couldn't play if it was having that detrimental an effect on his performances. Anyway, it isn't really about bashing Given. He's the best keeper we've had in my lifetime of watching us. And generally he has been very consistent over a long period which in many ways marks him out as a really good keeper because a lot seem to be brilliant for a while, suffer dips in form and never quite get back to what they were. Buffon's different class again though, which is the main reason I got into the thread.
