What has been Ashley's game?

Well I think it's safe to say he never intended to invest 'his' money in the club and was trying to move toward making the club function as a viable business in it's own right (something which is fine on a level playing field but cloud cuckoo land when your competitors are speculating like wild). He has himself been quoted from time to time making remarks about "You can't make money from Newcastle" etc..But I think deep down that was always his key motivation...I tend to think he got involved in football in a rush without properly examining the core nature of the business.

He has been hiding behind the figure of Keegan and he and his cohorts and minions have continued to work away to their own agenda leaving KK out front to field the press, with little information (it seems) about what was really going on.

Problem is the cok doesn't want to take a profit on the club and sell up.

I reckon he'd have taken the money if he'd been able to have made a quick, decent profit.

bit too early for me to feel so analytical but broadly I agree, but he never really understood what he was walking into.

That's it for me. He thought he could buy a football club, have a few laughs then sell it on for a tidy profit (probably had some knowledge of middle easterners looking at buying into English football). However, the amount of debt NUFC had really put the kybosh on his plans as he had to spend an awful lot of money to keep his toy a going concern. Once he had ploughed a load into keeping the club afloat, the selling price went drastically upwards if he was going to show a profit. This Abu Dhabi lot were scared off by Ashley's demands. Ashley is now left with something he can't sell for the profit he wanted.

True?? Who knows.

Plus he's been hit financially by a few things - the state of the UK economy impacting his business on top of England's failure to qualify for the Euros. There was also that money he lost in the stock exchange (don't know the ins and outs of that tbf) that was meant to be 100s of millions iirc.

yes, he didn't do his due diligence, but also - more than that - he didn't know what is involved in running a football club that desires success.

Should have sold to Abu Dhabi when he had the chance, whatever the state of football today is, this club needs a lift like they've given Citeh, if he knew the club like KK does, then he would have done for the fans.

The term Due Diligence will forever be rolling around his head. I bet he loses sleep over it  Ashley: 'If I had only looked at the books.'

Well, if there is a multi-billion organisation out there wanting to buy a football club with massive potential now's their chance. I guess Ashley would sell tomorrow if he could just come out evens.

EDIT: multi-billion organisation buys NUFC and appoints Kevin Keegan as manager. You heard it here first!!!

I think it was Chez who said very early on that KK had been hired as a distraction and a showpiece type appointment to keep the fans quiet (while he got on with his tricks). Or something like that.

What exactly are his tricks and didn't he realise that he would need to sack Keegan at the right time to not get criticism and not dig himself into a hole?

Would we want to buy success though literally throwing money at the club or building on successes and development?

Either would be preferable to the last few seasons. I'll take either as well.

The thing is from reading about this Man City lot they haven't exactly consulted Hughes about targets - not saying it wouldn't have been fun or better in the long run but a sale to them may have brought the same tensions.
