LeazesMag 0
This has been going on for so long that shirley both sides know what the other wants/expects. If a contract is being put to Owen now it must be have been virtually verbally agreed beforehand?? It's a difficult one to call this one. To let Owen leave would have a massive detrimental effect on projecting a good image to the rest of football, however he cannot be kept on silly money just for the sake of it. I'm pro Owen as he's virtually the only (near) world class player we have. if its difficult to tempt some players because you aren't in europe [which is a moot point anyway as I think that most players will know what the club is capable of doing] then getting players like Owen signed - early - is a statement of intent and something you can point at to prospective signings. But its all too little, too late for this window now. They have had all summer to do this, and basically have either learned a hard lesson, or they can fuck off if this is how they are going to run this club. Tooj 17
I hope Ashley is seeing the light but I won't be hedging my bets, its a bit late to rescue any ambition for this season now. We'll be ok, we'll just sign Sibierski and Bernard again. Prove our real ambition for the season. Can't spend money we don't have can we ? Have we now made a profit on our transfers this summer, big Mike will be pleased at such good business. I don't know, you tell me as you seem to know everything about what Ashley is doing. but you're trying to tell us that the only players we bought were Sibierski and Bernard ? We never needed players anywhere like we need new players now Jonny ? We certainly did need players back then, especially with a manager who was a lot less capable than Keegan. A lot less. And players who were of a lot higher standard than Sibierski and Bernard, which goes down to the manager not bringing in players of a sufficient quality. We certainly need players now as well which I've always maintained it's impossible to fix the mess Keegan was left with in one transfer window. Remember it took Robson three full seasons for the mess he inherited to be fully eradicated. I just find it impossible for you to make a post relating to anything with the current board without it coming from a biased standing point. snakehips 0
I said a while ago that I thought Ashley wanted the £80m he paid off our debts with back. This money will have been paid back this summer with the season ticket sales and money from league placing. The true intent of Ashley will be revealed at the winter transfer window and next summer. I also said I reckon Ashley will have sold NUFC within 18 months, so take your pick ha ha
Ketsbaia 0
:/ 120k a week for a player who managed <50 games in 3yearsif we weren't in such a shitty situation i doubt many would disagree with me saying thats fcking daft money 22 goals in that amount of appearances is good none the less. i don't disagree but 22goals from a 100k a week striker in 3years wouldn't get you a raise in normal circumstances i hope after offering this kind of deal (if he accepts) we get a good return on appearances for him this season and my opinion on his injury history is proved wrong, would be more than happy to be totally wrong in this case I don't think Owen has suffered from the same injury twice in his time here, he's just been very, very unlucky. Tooj 17
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/foo...icle4645803.ece Michael Owen, the Newcastle United forward, has been offered an improved three-year contract amid speculation that was ready to walk away from St James' Park. The club say the 28-year-old, who is in the final year of his current deal, will be offered improved terms on a three-year contract, which they hope will be enough to persuade the former Liverpool forward to stay in Tyneside. "Newcastle United can confirm that captain Michael Owen has been offered an extended and improved three-year contract," a club statement read. "The proposed terms of the new deal include an increased salary for Michael and demonstrate the club's commitment to keeping him. "The club hopes that this enhanced contract offer will keep him at St James' Park." Media reports had suggested Owen was prepared to walk away from the club after being offered a one-year extension and a reduced £85,000 a week. Clubs with the big fanbases like we have [of which we have the 3rd biggest crowd etc] , who do you think I mean ? You know what I always think whe we have this sort of discussion. You get cockney journos etc slating the club and fans off for saying how we think we are bigger than we are and then the response from us being that we are bigger than poxy little clubs such as Spurs and Villa for instance. Then when the time comes to match and beat these clubs in the transfer market etc, you make excuses for not doing it ? You can't have it both ways. Fact is we ARE bigger than those clubs, and also have advantages over clubs which have 2 clubs in the same city too. So if you don't expect and demand the club to try and take advantage of this, then you're underselling it.

Tom 14021
I think Villa have spent about £40m. I would say Sunderland have spent more or not far off. Tottenhams gross spending is pretty much nothing, if anything they have made a relative profit on what they have sold.
The Fish 11079
Maybe it's the history, maybe it's his positivity, maybe it's his old perm or new silver fox hair... but I just trust Keegan. So I'm not worried yet and will probably only be concerned if we free fall. If he's bringing in more people (which I think he will) I'm sure they won't be for the sake of satisfying miserly old bastards like Leazes. I trust him to bring in the right player, I trust him to make sound signings. If he doesn't sign anyone, I'd believe that it's because he couldn't find the right player for the right position. Norbert Colon 0
Wonder if the timing of this announcement has anything to do with the transfer window closing tomorrow - just speculating like but seems odd to announce they have offered the contract when he hasn't actually signed it - maybe a hurry up gesture on the part of the club to get it sorted once and for all - cos if he stalls he starts negotiations in january elsewhere

Happy Face 29
From Taylor the slag.... In an apparent U-turn, Newcastle United have offered Michael Owen a new three-year contract with a seemingly increased salary but it is far from certain that the England striker will sign it. Owen's current deal expires in June and sources last night were insisting that the most he could hope to extract from Newcastle was a one-year extension on a significantly reduced remuneration package and that the club would be willing to sell him for as little as £2m before tomorrow night's transfer deadline. However Owen's situation is understood to have been discussed at board level after Newcastle's 3-0 defeat at Arsenal on Saturday and, late last night, a club official issued a statement. "Newcastle United can confirm that captain Michael Owen has been offered an extended and improved three-year contract," it said. "The proposed terms of the new deal include an increased salary for Michael and demonstrate the club's commitment to keeping him. And the club very much hope that the enhanced contract offer will keep him at St James' Park." Although Owen's representatives are discussing this new offer with Newcastle there is some concern over the contractual small print which is believed to include several clauses dictating that the payment of the total proposed salary is dependent on various factors, including appearances. Owen currently earns a basic £103,000 a week on Tyneside which, once assorted adds-on are taken into account, rises to around £120,000. It is thought that his could now be poised to increase by up to £20,000 but that Owen may need to remain fit while sustaining a certain level of performance in order to claim the full sum. Negotiations over a new deal have dragged on since April with Kevin Keegan, the team's manager, anxious for Owen to be offered a new, enhanced, agreement but Mike Ashley, Newcastle's owner, who is determined to cut the wage bill, originally insisting that his remuneration should be slashed to £80,000. Keegan, who reluctantly sanctioned the sale of James Milner to Aston Villa last week, became increasingly anxious that the failure to agree a new deal would leave Owen a free agent next summer and able to talk to rival clubs in January. Last Wednesday Keegan met with Ashley and Dennis Wise, the club's executive football director, ostensibly to discuss Owen's position but, on Friday, the manager announced that talks about his contract had been postponed until Tuesday at the earliest. By then reports about the proposed one year, extension were already circulating but Keegan dismissed such suggestions as "rumour" while refusing to rule out the possibility of the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker being sold before the current transfer window closes. "No one is untouchable," said the former England coach. Nonetheless it seems that Ashley has finally decided that Owen is the nearest thing Newcastle have to an indispensable player and, in the wake of a welter of negative publicity surrounding Milner's sale, has made Newcastle's captain an offer which, despite those numerous exclusion clauses buried in the small print, is unlikely to be surpassed elsewhere. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/au...d.premierleague
