Dr Gloom 21868
mcclaren is about as good a coach as we're ever going to get under ashley, so i'm fairly pleased with his appointment - could have been much, much worse. i'm actually looking forward to the season now more than the previous two under pardew. i'm hoping ashley will see he's in danger of losing season ticket holders if he doesn't strengthen the squad and we can actually look forward to a season where we might compete in the odd game, or competition, instead of just drifting aimlessly. not that i'm getting carried away or owt. i'll have to review all of the above after the transfer window closes. it'd be nice to think he'll at least spend the money the club has generated on some new players. The Fish 10821
I'll be looking forward to the season if we do well recruitment-wise. Big ask. Annoying thing is that we're unlikely to know whether or not we've recruited well until a decent way into the season. Nobody was excited about Perez and he turned out to be an very good signing. Unless we sign "names", I think we'll be relying on 2nd, 3rd, 4th hand reports of a players' quality. fwiw I still think there's a decent player in Cabella and I'm hoping de Jong doesn't have such bad luck on the injury front. David Kelly 1224
He's definitely a better appointment than I feared so I'm quite happy with that. The fact that Carver and Stone are gone too is also a good sign. Whether or not the any of the other stuff (a board now 75% filled with football people, claims that we will actually make the cups a priority, investments will be made) is just more bullshit or an actual admission that what has gone on before isn't in the clubs best interests and things will change going forward remains to be seen. What I do know is the team we currently have available needs at least 4 players that can go straight into the starting 11 along with further additions to the squad to make sure players out of form or injured can be replaced effectively. Without that, we won't do much better than last season regardless of who is head coach.
OTF 7287
Yep, I've seen enough in Cabella to know he's a good player. I'd expect improvement across the board from players eager to stake their claim to a spot in the eleven. There's no way I'm getting carried away at any stage with the runs Ashley has up on the Douche Board, but at the very least this should make us more watch able. There will be subsequent player investment however it remains to be seen whether they'll get lucky in the inevitable 'bargain' range that the majority, if not all of our purchases will be. Kid Dynamite 7012
McLaren interested in Bas Dost apparently. Yes please! One bonus of McLaren is he's likely to be a draw to Dutch players after what he did at Twente
Happy Face 29
I was full of praise for the club on Tuesday. McClaren is a better appointment than the last 5. Carver and Stone being hoyed out showed a willingness to pay the price to get things right. Letting McClaren bring in his own men is spot on. The players let go so far shouldn't truthfully be getting on our bench if we have any ambition. Fans assuming we won't bring the right quantity of players seem to forget that just 12 months ago we signed 7 players and sold just one. So I'm confident of summer spending. I went so far as to say that the club have got everything right (except not replacing Carver sooner - but benefit of the doubt if they were waiting on McClaren) since the boycotts and protests started, whether coincidentally or not. The hierarchy are incapable of generating an ongoing feelgood atmosphere around the club though. Completely shot themselves in the foot only inviting Sky and The Mirror to talk to the new man. Instantly sours the majority of the media against the club. Not an insurmountable issue though. The problem last year was although 7 players came in their average cost was only £5m and we got nothing from 4 of them. Quantity, not quality. We need at least 3 £10m+ signings to bring some quality from front to back. I think Ashley is on record as saying he won't spend top dollar though, so we're likely to see more muddling through with what we can get on the cheap. I'm willing to be convinced otherwise, but still can't see it.
Kid Dynamite 7012
£25mil on Dost and Austin would be a cracking start. Cisse can offset £7mil of that.
toonotl 2976
This is the best managerial appointment since Keegan came back. And there's every chance it'll end the same way with McClaren walking when he gets shafted by Ashley and co. making decisions behind his back. McClaren joining is a positive first step. But it means jackshit until we see what sort of signings we make in the next few months.

One bonus of McLaren is he's likely to be a draw to Dutch players after what he did at Twente Didn't see this before I posted in the transfer thread. Isn't Bas Dost a bit of an injury concern? and this makes it sound like he needs quality delivery from wide positions, which isn't something we've got (barring Janmaat). Cabella isn't a winger, he cuts inside & looks to play a short ball. Should we expect Aarons to: a) start 2)play as a winger rather than an inside forward, iii)has the quality to provide that standard of service? Dr Gloom 21868
Aarons has to prove he isn't another sicknote first of all. I'd like to see us buy a couple true wingers, that can provide proper width, and have Aarons coming off the bench. Cisse will look more dangerous again if we start getting more balls into the box. we also clearly need a goal scorer and almost an entire new defence. toonotl 2976
Yeah. I don't think Aarons is anywhere near ready to be starting for a PL side. Let alone one such as us that apparently has the lofty ambition of finishing top half.

Defence wise we might be able to get by for a season with just signing one new, quality, centreback. If we just get rid of Williamson and get a quality player to play with Colo and have Taylor, Lacelles and Dummet as back up. I'm not saying it's ideal but you have to pick your battles and we certainly aren't going to have endless funds. It's taking a gamble that Colo can be arsed to recover some form but we've also seen Taylor play well at times when he's not injured. A new main central defender is key though so we need to be looking around the £10m mark. Leftback still isn't a position I'm completely comfortable with but I certainly do see some potential with Haidara and if he's got decent players with him (rather than Williamson) he might be able to push on.
